The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, then, it is once again Jeanneau’s turn, of which, below, 5 of the most outstanding Sun Fast ever produced.

Jeanneau (Sun Fast), 5 outstanding hulls from 6.6 to 15.5 meters
Jeanneau’s story begins with motorboats, in 1957, with young Henry Jeanneau building a wooden hull in his father’s hardware store to participate in the “Six Hours of Paris.” It is the first brick in a story that is still far from over. In 1964 the first sailboat arrives; it is the Alizé, which will be a huge success. However, it will be the Sun Fast and Sun Odyssey series that will fully mark the history of the brand. Below are 5 of the most relevant Sun Fast products.
Sun 2000
specs: 6.63 x 2.54 m; 2000; Olivier Petit It’s 2000 and, if not quite a Sun Fast, Jeanneau develops a mignon hull with similar tendencies to the cabin line. Only, it is a dayboat. But it will be the dayboat of 2000. Small, compact, spartan, it is a weekender perhaps underrated, but loaded with potential. Trailerable, canting-drifted and still with a well-organized interior and enough amenities, it is indeed the hull for those who want to go boating without frills, without demands. From the lake, from the harbor, from the beach, it is unstoppable and single-handed. In short, for the everyday, it has it all.
Sun Fast 36
specs: 11.31 x 3.49 m; 1994; Philippe Briand One of the great superstars of 1990s sailing and one of the great shipyards of France. From this combination, the mid-1990s saw (again) the birth of a minor prodigy. Indeed, after successes in world championships and two America’s Cup hulls, Briand signs a performance-cruiser that is ultra-modern for her time, strong with a torpedo bulb fin and powerful, fractional rigging. She will be a small trend setter.
Sun Fast 37
specs: 11.40 x 3.70 m; 2000; Jacques Fauroux Just three years earlier, with the Sun Odyssey 37, Jeanneau and Fauroux signed a very valid cruiser, but with the turn of the millennium, a new 37-footer is now needed for the Sun Fast line. Faroux signs an even better performing, more balanced hull, based yes on the hull of the previous one, but with rethought bow sections and more flared stern sections. He also adds a new bulb and an enlarged rudder, as well as twisting the deck. After all, this is a cruiser racer, and on the water it shows.
Sun Fast 39
specs: 11.87 x 3.89 m; 1989; Jacques Fauroux In the late 1980s Faroux was on the crest of a wave in France and beyond. In ’89, in light of this, he collaborated with Jeanneau on a new 39-footer for the Sun Fast and Sun Odyssey lines. The broad lines are the same, but if the Sun Odyssey looks to cruising, the Sun Fast winks at racers, with an improved hull, several appendages and totally rethought deck. As will do years later for the 37, these are two totally different boats, both capable, certainly, but well set for their intended use.
Sun Fast 52
specs: 15.56 x 4.42 m; 1992-1994; #20; Philippe Briand Jeanneau opens the 1990s with a series of good projects but, among them, in the cruiser-racer segment the hull that stands out is one: the Sun Fast 52. At 15.5 meters in length, it is immediately an ambitious hull, a boat that knows how to make itself known, and the lines prove it. In fact, Briand signs a hull that is indeed elegant, strong with a beautiful deck and tapered volumes, but goes beyond the look, designing a hull with powerful, high-performance lines, and strong with bulbous centreboard and oversized rudder. It will be produced in just 20 examples, but for a 15-meter, 20 examples in 2 years speaks volumes.
