It is called “Ole Miss” and it is the new Class 6 Meters that U.S. sailing champion Dennis Conner, a.k.a. “Mr. America’s Cup,” recently gave himself and with which he will compete in the World Championship scheduled for next September.
At the ripe old age of 83, the great Dennis Conner, a.k.a. “Mr. America’s Cup,” still seems a long way from retiring from the racing world. On the contrary, the U.S. sailor is relaunching himself in a new adventure all to live and share with his fans. Last Jan. 18, during a podcast recorded on his social platform, the four-time America’s Cup winner, Olympic bronze medalist, and two-time world championship holder in the Star class announced that he had purchased a new racing boat.
A hull designed and built in Spain
This is a 6-Meter Class hull designed by Spanish architect Javi Celar and built in the Cadiz shipyards. The idea of measuring himself with this box rules class came to Dennis Conner by frequenting the 6-Meter Class environment just in Spain where he has many friends, including King Juan Carlos, who is very fond of this boat and who convinced him to take it. Conner himself to test it thoroughly in the past months had borrowed one from his friend Bob Cadronel and was very pleased with it, both the performance and the rigging and handling.
He also had a desire to try his hand at a clear and simple class rule, without having to deal with lengthy and complex rating operations during race rankings. The boat has very sleek lines, a significant displacement, but also a very balanced sail plan with mainsail and jib.
Goal: to win the 2025 World Class
Dennis Conner’s new boat, christened “Ole Miss,” was then transferred from Spain to the port of San Diego, USA, with a 3-week cargo ship voyage, well stowed with the rigging disassembled, including the mast, inside a 12-meter container.
Dennis Conner’s goal is to participate with “Ole Miss” in the Class 6 Meters 2025 Worlds that are scheduled for Sept. 17-26 in the waters of Centre Island in Oyster Bay, New York. The event is organized by the prestigious Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. Should he win, it would be the 29th world title won by “Mr. America’s Cup,” a truly stainless sailor! So, dear Dennis, “Enjoy!”
