The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, then, it is the turn of the Jeanneau, of which, below, 5 of the most relevant Sun Odyssey ever produced.

Jeanneau (Sun Odyssey), 5 outstanding hulls from 7.4 to 15.4 meters
Jeanneau’s story begins with motorboats, in 1957, with young Henry Jeanneau building a wooden hull in his father’s hardware store to participate in the “Six Hours of Paris.” It is the first brick in a story that is still far from over. In 1964 the first sailboat arrives; it is the Alizé, which will be a huge success. However, it will be the Sun Fast and Sun Odyssey series that will fully mark the history of the brand.
Sun Odyssey 26
specifications: 7.47 x 2.95 m; 1998-2003; #240; Philippe Briand
Developed from the hull of the just previous Sun Fast, the Sun Odyssey 26 was a hull of no small success, with over 240 units built by the French shipyard. Also available in a version with a movable daggerboard, it drew the good speed qualities from its older sister, but reduced its “nervousness” thanks to a less powerful sail plan and a more manageable deck in a smaller crew. A vessel in its own way revolutionary.
Sun Odyssey 32.2
specs: 9.50 x 3.00 m; 1998-2002; #400+; Jacques Fauroux With more than 400 hulls sold, this small vessel has certainly been able to enjoy no small success. Signed by the Jeanneau/Fauroux duo, iThe 32.2 is indeed the classic French-style small cruising boat: it is comfortable, it does not lack space and light below deck, and the exteriors are optimized so that virtually anyone can take it. A boat truly for everyone.
Sun Odyssey 34.2
specs: 10.29 x 3.28 m; 1998; #980; Jacques Fauroux A huge success for the French shipyard, the Sun Odyssey 34.2 is a compact cruiser capable of resounding acclaim, to say the least: 980 units launched. Comfortable, voluminous and easy to handle, she fully reflects the direction the yard has taken with this line, offering a hull truly capable of being the cruiser for everyone: a balanced boat, safe in important winds and favorable to medium winds, strong as she is with significant displacement and reduced sail area. In terms of opportunity, a gem.
Sun Odyssey 47
specs: 14.4 x 4.45 m; 1991; #40+; Philippe Briand With the Sun Odyssey 47 we are confronted with one of the great hulls of the line. Briand, here, signs a cruiser destined to exceed forty examples thanks to a hull designed to accommodate the needs of cruising, confirming itself with the public as a comfortable, stable boat with the strength of a large cockpit and stepped transom.
Two versions will be produced, a standard and a CC, center-well version.
Sun Odyssey 51
specs: 15.49 x 4.88 m; 1989-1992; #N/A+; Bruce Farr/J&J Design At the 1988 Paris Boat Show, she stunned visitors because of the double rudders in the cockpit, until then the prerogative of sport boats, seen before only on the French competitor, the First 51. Behind it was the hand of designer (then on the crest of a wave) Bruce Farr (with the collaboration of Slovenians J&J), who came up with an innovative cruiser that was fast, easy to handle and had beautiful lines.
It went down a storm, setting the new standard for cruisers.
