The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, then, it is the turn of the J. Here, then, are 5 of the most relevant J/Boats ever produced.

J/Boats, 5 outstanding hulls from 7.3 to 12.45meters
In 1975, overseas in the United States, a small hull destined to change the rules of the game began to come to life. It would be launched in 1976, proving to be a small masterpiece and immediately going into production. It is the J/24, Johnstone’s first masterpiece, the most successful monotype ever. It is a milestone and a stepping stone, the foundation of J-Boats, one of the most famous shipyards in America and the world. More jewels will follow, but the first one is never forgotten.
J/24
specifications: 7.32 x 2.71 m; 1976-2008+; +#5500; Rodney (Rod) Johnstone More than a boat, a myth. Produced in over 5500 examples, in production for over thirty years, the J/24 needs no introduction. Small, compact, agile, and suitable for everyone, it is for many the boat of the heart, a hull on which to race, compete at the highest level, or with which to take day trips, relaxing, and then even spending a night or two out of town. Comprehensive, balanced, it is simply a star of world shipbuilding.

J/80
specs: 8.00 x 2.51 m; 1992; #1500; Rodney (Rod) Johnstone In 1992, looking to renew the (undiminished) success of the J/24, Johnstone set his sights on a new hull, a sportier, more contemporary and faster monotype. The J/80 was born, another success story. Agile, fast and easy to handle, while capable of becoming technical in the right measure, this is a balanced, fun boat destined for great things. Not for nothing, it quickly becomes a class with, today, over 1,500 hulls launched…

J/32
specs: 9.94 x 3.35 m; 1996-2003; #85; Alan Johnstone In 1996 J-Boats bet on a hull intended for pure cruising, a boat capable of reclaiming the myth of the 40-foot sloop with which to sail far and wide. But it decides to make it more of a small one. Thus the J/32 was born: long deckhouse, barely a hint of soaring, classic, almost old-fashioned lines, and perfect balance. It is a boat made to sail even in two, to go anywhere, and its lines prove it. It is a small success dedicated to all those who, still, looked to the sailing of yesteryear, dreaming. Alan Johnstone signs here a timeless hull.

J/120
specs: 12.19 x 3.66 m; 1994-2006; #230; Johnstone With the legendary J/120 you have the progenitor of the J-Boats performance line, a combination that looks at the combination of cruising and racing, offering the best possible on both fronts. It is the classic ‘passage-maker,’ a boat capable of going anywhere, even short-handed, offering as much comfort as it does adrenaline. Her 230 hulls produced are a good testament to how much she was valued, while, low freeboard, low deckhouse and not too much width are her hallmarks. A gem.

J/125
specs: 12.5 x 3.23 m; 1997-2003; #16; Johnstone If the 1996 J/32 was a hull that looked to the past, to champagne sailing, with the 1997 J instead churned out a small bolide, the J/125. Produced in small numbers but an immediate success, the J/125 is as close to high-performance as J had produced to that time. A hull designed for very little cruising but making up for it with plenty of speed, resulting in a hull that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also seaworthy and fast, strong with clean lines and bulbous fins of a true performer. An underrated cult favorite.
