Metis 45 - 1
Metis 45, the new bolide from St. George Marine

A new One Design flying bolide, 15.50 meters long (13.72 hull length) and 4.48 wide, made in Italy, has been born.

Metis 45 (15.50 m)

We are talking about the Metis 45, full-foiling designed for offshore double and crew racing: the boat will be built by the Genoese shipyard San Giorgio Marine based on a design by Gianluca Guelfi and Fabio d’Angeli. A young reality (the shipyard led by Edoardo Bianchi was born in 2021), young designers (and with innovative and out-of-the-box ideas, as they had told us here) who have already collaborated profitably. Suffice it to say that they are behind Ambrogio Beccaria’s Musa40 Alla Grande Pirelli with which the Milanese sailor entered the Olympus of ocean sailing.

Metis 45, the secrets

The boat’s focus is clear, but not easy to achieve: to combine cutting-edge technology, affordable costs and previously unimaginable performance possibilities on this size, comparable to that of a 60-footer. Equipped with an innovative system of steerable foils attached to the bulb, inspired by the “manta rafts” of the Ultim-class ocean trimarans, the Metis 45 will be able to take off and fly over the water in a very stable manner, distributing lift between the side foil and the center manta.

Full-foiling stable

Using innovative, specially developed dynamic simulation software, the designers were able to demonstrate how the Metis 45 achieves stable flight (full-foiling) even on an offshore course without the need for an active control system. With a configuration designed for a crew of 2-5 with the addition of a mediaman, the boat offers a modern and safe deck plan with an enclosed cockpit with large transparent surfaces for optimal visibility. The hull, inspired by planing powerboats, features flared sections to reduce acceleration and improve passage over the wave in transition to flying on foils.

Round-the-world goal in stages?

The Metis 45 aims to be a link between the Class40 boats and the Imoca 60s, offering an innovative solution for up-and-coming and not-so-up-and-coming skippers and teams who aspire to compete in offshore and foiling events. And who knows-we add-that it might not be chosen as a new class to compete in The Ocean Race, the round-the-world crewed stage race. The prime goal seems to be just that… With a Class40-inspired design, the Metis 45 retains simplicity in onboard systems, avoiding complex hydraulics and electronics, but can achieve exceptional speeds thanks to its innovative foil configuration.

One last curiosity. Why Metis? The idea for the name came from Guelph, in continuity with Musa40. Metis is a goddess, daughter of Oceanus and Thetis, who is the personification of wisdom and cunning intelligence.
