New year, new Classic Boats: here come the ‘Class 2000s’. We open the year on the ‘classic’ front by talking about those early 21st-century designs that, in the next 12 months, will turn a full 25 years since their first launch, thus classifying themselves as Classic Boats. From these, we have selected 20 mass-built, fiberglass models that, now, become classifiable as having historical value. This adds 20 Classic Boats to the 300+ already surveyed by our editorial staff (you can find them HERE). And their value increases…
Class 2000 – 5 early 21st century Classic Boats from 11 to 12.7 meters
Do they increase in value? Yes, and we are not talking about an emotional value. Rather, we are talking about a real increase in their value, a value they deserve because of their characteristics of innovation, beauty, quality, and performance. There are, in fact, boats that are worth more than others and will be worth even more over time. By now we have talked about them several times, these are the Classic Boats by Giornale della Vela, boats built in fiberglass and in series since 1967, with a minimum of 25 years on their shoulders, and selected on the basis of very precise canons, which transcend the age of the artifact and focus on the intrinsic historical value, starting with the overall design qualities and the originality of the boat in its context. Therefore, looking back to 2000, here are the last 5 boats of 20, the Classic Boats of the new upgrade related to the 00s of this century: 5 Classic Boats from 14.6 to 19.2 meters.

OVNI 455 (CC)
Alubat; 2000-2007; 14.61 x 4.39 m; Philippe Briand
In 1994, Alubat launched its Ovni 455, an aluminum, angled, tilt-drift cutter. Success. In 2000, the yard turned again to Briand to rework the design and give birth to the center-cockpit version, as marine as its predecessor but set to be even “drier.” The Ovni 455 CC was born, a variant that consecrated the model among the large ocean-going hulls. In both versions, it will remain in production until 2007…
WAUQUIEZ PILOT SALOON 48
Wauquiez; 2000-2005; 14.90 x 4.50 m; Ed Dubois
Designed by the great Ed Dubois, Wauquiez’s Pilot Saloon 48 is a small, 22-unit success story in just five years. That might seem few, but we’re not talking about a performance-cruiser or a small cruising hull. The PS48 is in fact a bluewater to go around the world, go anywhere, optimized in every respect, from the central cockpit to the water lines. A great little masterpiece from the French shipyard.
OYSTER 53
Oyster Marine Ltd; 2000-2008; 16.41 x 4.65 m; Rob Humphreys
With the Oyster 53, his second collaboration with the yard, Rob Humphreys signs a small masterpiece of no less than 53 examples: a resounding success produced for no less than 8 years. 4-cabin layout, with possible on-board workshop to replace one, powerful sail plan and fast, balanced hull. She is a superb hull in all conditions, ideal for touring the world, doing what one wants. It should be much more talked about than it already is. Cult.
MOODY 54
Moody; 2000-2004; 16.43 x 4.85 m; Bill Dixon
With as many as 55 examples produced in just four years, the Moody 54 is a bluewater whose numbers already tell a lot about her. A central and well-protected cockpit, a glazed deckhouse to illuminate the interior, and generous volumes alone make this a pleasant hull to say the least. Add to that Bill Dixon’s hull and you’re done. A generous hull, to say the least, for long cruising, all the time.
OYSTER 62
Oyster Marine Ltd; 2000; 19.28 x 5.39 m; Rob Humphreys
With the Oyster 62 it is the numbers that speak, for this is a globetrotter capable of putting 200 miles under the keel in a single day, which is no small feat. Here Humphreys signs another jewel, a hull made for living aboard, for going anywhere, and doing it not only with class, but also in a sporting manner. Indeed, to his credit there are ARC victories, victories at Antigua Sailing Week and Arctic voyages up to 80 degrees north… Unstoppable.
