A boat with few compromises, this is what a part of X-Yachts’ clientele, those fond of the yard’s sports boats that have made its history even in racing, had been asking for a long time. After two years of study they were satisfied, because the XR 41, waiting to see the results on the race courses, is definitely a boat “pushed” in so many ways.
In the design, with aesthetic choices that characterize her in an important way; in the philosophy very unbalanced towards the pure sport side, in the organization of the deck equipment designed for maximum efficiency (8 winches) in racing use, and in the interiors, all in lightened sandwich and available in a Sport version that can also be exploited in cruising and in a racing version designed only for racing. A long-reasoned boat, designed with the latest software to achieve a good ratio between real performance on the water and performance on ORC compensated time, developed by the X-Yachts design team in collaboration with Olympic sailor Jasper Radic, who is also overseeing its development under sail with a team of professionals.
XR 41, what a boat it is
We were saying about the 8 winches on deck, which are already a clear statement of intent for the type of use of the boat. As standard, the two primaries for the headsails are two Harken 60s, definitely well sized. Completing the set are the two winches for the German mainsail, the pair for handling the backstay, which has two separate lines to be able to handle the passage of the mainsail square top. Mainsail that is also offered in a version with classic luff, and consequently single backstay, in a configuration designed for double handling. The latter has less horsepower in the sail plan, and about 400 kg more weight in the keel, exploitable if desired also for those looking for a less pushed boat for yes sporty but less competitive use. The cockpit is available with or without additional benches.
Cross rail for the jib, with 3D sheet point adjustable from a battery of chokes located on deck, the jib sheet, on the other hand, runs in a straight line, through fairleads, from the primary 60 winch directly to the sail.
XR 41 – Fairing and interior
The shipyard offers several options for handling the rigging: manual, manual hydraulic, electrically assisted hydraulic. In the first version the management for example of the forestay adjustment is the classic one with the turnbuckle. In the hydraulic version, the vang, forestay, mainsail base, and Cunningham are managed by the on-board hydraulics, with a control unit located near the clubman’s station.
An in-depth study was done for the hull, with the distinctive round V noticeable at the extreme stern. An element that should ensure a reduction in the overall wetted surface area when the boat is flat, keeping out the ends of the stern, which, on the other hand, when the boat is heeled, plunge in, lengthening the buoyancy. Not too fine volumes at the bow, with the distinctive inverted bow characterizing the boat. It should be emphasized that the XR 41 even in its design intentions is not a planing boat, as indeed very few are in ORC, but certainly at carrying swells surfing will be easy as will the double-digit speeds already recorded in early testing. Sail plan numbers have not yet been released.
The interiors are available with 2 or 3 cabins, in the sport version with two tables, in the racing version with 1; in both cases the tables are removable. In the racing version in fact the cabins are completely empty, the aft ones equipped with anti-roll sheets, and one of the galley modules is removable.
The price? Starting at 438,000 euros, excluding vat, with few accessories. Realistically, at least 600,000 euros are needed for a boat armed for racing.
