The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, then, it is the turn of Farr, which, although not a shipyard but a studio, by necessity of things falls into this list given the typical approach taken. Here, then, are 5 of the most relevant Grand Soleil products.

Grand Soleil, 5 exceptional hulls from 10 to 19 meters
There once existed “Sailboats,” builder of hulls such as the legendary Orca 43 (Dick Carter). Then eclipse and rebirth. It is the early 1970s, Groupe Finot is designing a 34-footer, and at the same time, Raul Gardini “lends” 3 million lire to Giuseppe Giuliani Ricci. The game is soon up, a shipyard is reborn from its ashes, but the approach is new. It is 1973, and with Finot’s 34-footer, Cantiere del Pardo and the Grand Soleil range are born. The rest is history… (a history you can read HERE).

Grand Soleil 34
specs: 10.18 x 3.44 m; 1972-1983; #300; Jean-Marie Finot The Grand Soleil 34, a boat that embodies in itself a huge slice of nautical history. It is the boat with which Cantiere del Pardo was born, a small masterpiece. Out of the box at the time, with its short deckhouse and huge stern to say the least, it was a huge success. A success that was worth no less than 300 examples and a production run of no less than 11 years. Quite simply, a great boat and, today, a cult favorite as well. The cornerstone and foundation stone of the entire Leopard Shipyard.

Grand Soleil 45
specifications: 13.94 x 4.15 m; 1988; #N/A; German Frers We are in the late 1980s and the ‘French period’ is coming to an end. Finot first and Jezequel later are succeeded by a new pencil, that of the archistar Frers. Thus was born the Grand Soleil 45, an elegant, marine hull and, above all, capable of combining performance and comfort in the best possible way. The water lines only clean, streamlined, and know how to draw a boat that is pleasant not only at the helm, but also that to the eye. A treat.

Grand Soleil 46.3
specs: 13.98 x 4.4 m; 1996; #N/A; J&J End of the century, the Jacopin brothers collaborate with the pardo yard on a new hull. The 46.3 was born, not only modern and in step with the times, but exceptional. This is a modern, elegant boat with a very clean deckhouse brilliantly set in an impeccable flush deck. Under the waterline it is powerful, the lines are sleek, and the hull proves to be a successful cruiser-racer as a result. Such a startup begs for an encore, to which J&J acquiesce, later also giving birth to the GS37 and GS43.

Grand Soleil 52
specs: 16.3 x 4.75 m; 1987; #N/A; German Frers Huge stern, flared ends, double cockpit and immense beam: a full 4.75 meters. Just a glance and you see the signature of this Grand Soleil: Frers. With the Grand Soleil 52 we are confronted, quite simply, with a small masterpiece, excellent under sail and equally capable of passing all aesthetic judgments. It is simply a legend among the brand’s successes.

Grand Soleil Maxi ONE (GS64)
specs: 19.50 x 5.35 m; 1992; #N/A; Bruce Farr Huge, fully flush, launched and as elegant as few hulls, the Grand Soleil Maxi One is basically a Shipyard statement, a floating masterpiece, signed Farr. Seaworthy and comfortable, she will quickly prove capable of being both a representative flagship and an outstanding performer between the buoys. A ‘little’ masterpiece and an outstanding witness to early 1990s sailing.
