Terrible news has shocked Italian sailing, which loses one of its most iconic sailors, Matteo Auguardo, 48, who was swept away by an avalanche along with two other ski mountaineers while they were ascending the east ridge of Punta Valgrande, in the Leonine Alps on the Swiss border, altitude 2856 meters. Matteo was the husband of our colleague and contributor Rachele Vitello who conducted the last editions of our Sailor of the Year, father of two girls aged 12 and 14, and was considered one of the most highly regarded professionals in the sailing world. An all-around sportsman, sailing was his job, mountains and ski mountaineering one of his other greatest passions, as were biking and kiting. Matteo Auguardo was a point of reference in the sailing world, from offshore to monotypes via box rules classes, he had been the bowman of Mascalzone Latino in the 2007 America’s Cup. Bowman of the Tp 52 Alegre, also ever-present in the RC 44 and ClubSwan classes, he had recently celebrated victory in the Maxi Worlds with Vesper. For him, on the pages of Il Corriere della Sera, Vasco Vascotto and Flavio Favini have spoken moving words, telling of him as one of the best sailors around but above all as a good guy, a crewman who never said a word out of place. In a photo on his own socials with Rachele and his two daughters, Matteo had written, “my queen and the two princesses,” and those who knew him well tell of the very strong bond he had with his family despite the fact that for his work he was often around the world. The editorial staff of Il Giornale della Vela sends its love to Rachele, Allegra and Carlotta at this terrible time. Hi Matteo Auguardo.
