The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, then, it is the turn of Farr, which, although not a shipyard but a studio, by necessity of things falls into this list given the typical approach taken. Here, then, are 5 of the most relevant Farr models ever designed.

Farr Yacht Design, 5 outstanding hulls from 7.5 to 12.4 meters
Building on the great design skills of Bruce Farr, joined by those of Russell Bowler in 1981, Farr Yacht Design (originally Bruce Farr & Associates) was born to quickly become one of the most successful and successful design teams ever, with more than 43 World Championships in 30 years and outstanding results in events such as the Ocean Race, America’s Cup, Vendée Globe and Sydney Hobart, to name a few… offering, however, all-around designs, from pure racer to monotype, cruiser-racer to cruising hulls… In short, a Cult studio.
PLATU 25
specs: Beneteau/McDell Marine; 7.53 x 2.62 m; 1997-2017C; Bruce Farr Yacht Design Small and ultra-fast, she is the ‘petite one-design’ of the mid-1990s, an exceptional hull that will know how to stay in production for nearly two decades. ISAF class, this is an agile and compact vessel, deeply sporty and designed exclusively for racing. Basically, a miniature Farr 40 from which to extract as much fun as possible, even on dedicated circuits…

MUMM 30 / FARR 30
specs: Carrol Marine / Ovington; 9.43 x 3.08 m; 1995; #200C; Farr Yacht Design She is the pearl among the pure racers of the mid-1990s. Designed to be a sailing missile, extreme in every way and aesthetically impeccable, the Farr 30-also known as the MUMM 30, because of the Champagne the circuit was sponsored by-is a thoroughbred that is ideal today both between the buoys and as a daysailer. Strengthened by its low wetted surface area, exceptional balance and huge sail area it became, undoubtedly, a must-have of sailing worldwide.

FARR 31
specs: Carrol Marine / Artmare; 9.52 x 3.30 m; 1978; Farr Yacht Design In the late 1970s Bruce Farr represented the voice out of the chorus, the signature capable of designing boats that were different, in their own way beautiful and deeply competitive. The striking case of the end of the decade is the FARR 31, an IOR-class Half Tonner capable of outstanding figures in all conditions (even today). To its credit, moreover, it should be remembered how it was among the very first hulls that could glide without any problem.

FARR 395 ONE DESIGN (OD)
specs: Carrol Marine; 12.01 x 3.71 m; 2000-2003; Farr Yacht Design Among the newer Classic Boats, first launched ‘only’ 25 years ago, the Farr 395 OD (One Design) was no small challenge. Conceived with Carrol Marine to challenge the big racer cruisers, she builds on the legacy of the design studio’s pure racer designs, yet offers a 12-footer that is yes pulled and fast, but aimed at those owners who not only wanted agility and handling, but also the comforts of a livable hull. It is, in short, an all-around cruiser-racer, but very fast.

FARR 40
specs: Carrol Marine; 12.41 x 4.03 m; 1997; #160C; Farr Yacht Design With the FARR 40 you enter a realm apart, that of exceptional hulls, period. A one-design class of excellence for more than a decade, a proving ground for all the greatest champions, this 40′ footer is, essentially, a unique one-off object, as unique as vintage Ferraris and Porsches can be. Conceived as a hull intended to grind out the most miles in the shortest possible time, today, it may no longer be the hull for those in search of records to break, but it is nonetheless a fireball, still fun and capable of having its say even among the buoys.
