Now we are really there. Green light for the new boating license. A decree has been published in the Official Gazette (Dec. 19, 2024) indicating programs and methods of conducting the examination for the recently introduced “D1” license that is also accessible to minors.
“D1” boating license operational
This is precisely a qualification that can be obtained from the age of 16 and allows exclusively daytime navigation within six miles of the coast with “watercraft” (units up to 10 meters) or, from the age of 18, with boats up to 12 meters in length, or with jet skis within one mile of the coast, if these units are equipped with engines of no more than 85 Kw equal to 115.6 HP.
How to get the license
The training course, to be conducted at nautical schools or boating education centers, includes at least 5 hours of theory in “face-to-face” and in-person lectures, plus 5 non-consecutive hours of individual practical boating exercises. The practical exercises are to be carried out on units at least 5.90 meters long, with an engine of more than 30 kW and registered in the ATCN, i.e., the recreational craft registers. The final proficiency test consists of a theory-only test with 15 quizzes divided according to the topics indicated in the syllabus: hull theory (1), engine (2), safety (3), maneuvering and conduct (2) Colreg and maritime signaling (2), meteorology (1), navigation (1), boating and environmental regulations (3). At least 12 correct answers must be given in a maximum time of thirty minutes to pass the test. Answers not given or corrected are considered incorrect. The D1 boating license examination can also be taken as a private candidate at the Offices of the Civil Motorization by presenting the certificate of the conduct of practical exercises issued by the nautical schools or the nautical education centers.
