Dufour, 5 exceptional hulls from 9 to 12.8 meters
The origins of Dufour Shipyards are closely linked to those of its creator, Michel Dufour. An engineer and sailing enthusiast, he would give life to iconic hulls, literally revolutionizing the entire industry, starting with his first design, the Sylphe, later revisited and pantographed in a big way in the Arpège, the first mass-produced fiberglass boat. From 1967 to 1979 he prolifically produced exceptional hulls, giving birth to one of the most important shipyards in the world, which he abandoned, however, in 1980, causing it to continue, however, on its way. Arpège
specs: 9.14 x 3.02 m; 1967-1976; #1500; Michel Dufour L’Arpège, a hull hardly unknown to any sailing enthusiast. And the reason is simple: not only was it a small masterpiece, a revolution in concept and design, but it was the first large series boat to be made of fiberglass, and it was in incredible numbers to this day. As many as 1,500 examples in 10 years! Made by the brilliant and forerunner Michel Dufour, it was born from an earlier intuition of his (Sylphe) and turned out to be spot on: very wide beam, large interiors and not excessive leaps made it a beloved hull, as well as fast and marine. Quite simply, a Cult, brilliant.
Dufour 334 Trophy
specs: 10.30 x 3.35 m; 1999; #N/A; J&J Design She is small and she is compact, but she is also perhaps the best Dufour to come out of the yard in the late 1990s. Signed J&J, the 334 Trophy is in fact one of the sportiest hulls ever produced by the brand, a hull loaded with ambition and one that, although it may lend itself to it, doesn’t really look to cruising. Thin-sectioned water lines, reduced aft wetted surface area, powerful sail plan and contained beam in fact make her a small bolide, a boat that, no matter what, wants to race. Perhaps the best ’90s Dufour to keep between the buoys. A gem.
Dufour 35
specs: 10.75 x 3.45; 1971-1982 ; #450; Michel Dufour It may not be the most beautiful Dufour ever designed, but it is probably among the most marine and important ones Michel Dufour ever got to design. It was 1971 when the Dufour 35 was born, a boat of ‘important’ dimensions for its time and, above all, designed to sail in the ocean. Docile at the helm, strong with powerful lines and important leaps, it is a hull made to cope with the sea and demanding conditions, while offering a particularly voluminous interior (thanks to the huge beam) and a well sheltered cockpit. She will be a 450-unit success, the quintessential way to boating according to Dufour. For good measure, there are still plenty of them to be found everywhere.

Dufour 39
specs: 11.98 x 3.80 m; 1982 1994-; #160; German Frers After Michel Dufour left his yard, Dufour was immediately forced to look elsewhere for the design of its hulls. In the early 1980s, one of the intervening hands was that of the great German Frers. It will be from these that the Dufour 39 will take shape, a hull certainly less innovative than the initial thrust subscribed to by Dufour, but no less appreciable. Clean, strong with beautiful design and comfort to spare, it is indeed among the most appreciable hulls of that period, a quality clearly visible in the numbers: 160 examples.

Lacoste 42
specs: 12.85 x 3.96 m; 1985; #12; Sparkman & Stephens A few years after Frers’ excellent 39-footer, Dufour continued its collaborations with outside architects. In the case of the Lacoste 42, the idea is simple: make a hull that is fast and elegant but makes a splash. The recipe involves, instead of over-the-top designs, a commercial operation: co-branding with Lacoste. This is the first time such a thing has happened and, as a result, the design must also carry signatures of caliber. It will be Sparkman&Stephens who will sign the 12-meter, resulting in a hull that is not only refined, but also capable of impressing with its pace and seaworthiness. The series will be limited, only 12 examples planned, all immediately sold, of course….
