Nine minutes and thirty seconds, that’s the gap that separated Yoann Richomme on Arkea Paprec from Charlie Dalin on Macif at the passage of Cape Horn, the last Cape of the Southern Oceans that marks the return of the round-the-world racers to the Atlantic. It was a crazy duel, which saw Richomme round the Horn with less than 1 mile to spare over Dalin, in a battle that would continue all the way up the Atlantic, and all the way to the finish in Les Sables d’Olonne.
The leading duo managed to stay ahead of a massive disturbance front coming over the Cape area and they made the passage in all-too-manageable conditions, with winds around 25 knots and moderate seas, while Sebastien Simon in third will suffer much tougher conditions. Yoann Richomme now has an 8-mile lead over Charlie Dalin, and the two will face an area of more uncertain winds as they approach the Falklands/Malvinas. The two are about 4 days ahead of Armel Le Cleac’h, who had finished the 2016-2017 Vendée in 74 days. In 19th, meanwhile, Giancarlo Pedote on Prysmian passed New Zealand and threw himself back in pursuit of Jean Le Cam and Isabelle Joschke, who got away from him in the passage from an anticyclone zone where Prysmian lagged.
