Perhaps we “provoked” him a little too much: he had been told that he was tired, that he was hiding some problems (and indeed he had a major sail trouble), that he never let us see what sail configuration he was sailing with, and that he was undergoing yet another comeback. And Charlie Dalin then responded in his own way, opening up the throttle on his Macif and in 24 hours restored order in the round-the-world race. With averages of close to 600 miles in the 24 hours, he chased back Yoann Richomme and Sebastien Simon, and took back the lead in the Vendée Globe with authority. Mind you, Dalin has just 40 miles ahead of Richomme and 60 ahead of Simon, basically not even two hours ahead at the averages they hold, practically nothing, but he has gained them by sailing in the exact same conditions as his rivals. Bravura of the skipper or characteristics of Macif better suited to the average wind conditions the three outriders are experiencing these hours? The quality of the three in the lead is sublime, so it is probably also the boat that is helping Dalin perform better in this hand-to-hand phase with his two direct rivals. The three are transiting about 400 miles southwest of Point Nemo, the furthest point from any landmass; Cape Horn is now just over 2,000 miles away. The passage by the Cape that marks the end of the Southern Oceans is scheduled for Christmas Eve, under conditions that are expected to be very harsh.
Vendée Globe. Giancarlo Pedote in top 20, overtaking Jean Le Cam
We can say that it is a Giancarlo Pedote in great shape that we are seeing in the last few days. He continues to put “coal” in his Prysmian and push it hard in the medium northwest wind conditions he is encountering these hours. Giancarlo was one of the fastest in the fleet, clocking 555 miles in the 24 hours this morning, averaging not far behind the three leading the race. His speed has earned him overtaking Jean Le Cam, who was literally eaten up by the Italian who was over 100 miles behind the Frenchman a few days ago.Prysmian is now in 19th position and is targeting Isabelle Joschke, but also in the duel for the top 20 is Alan Roura.
