The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding alphabetically, then, here are Barberis and 5 of the best boats the yard has ever launched.

Bavaria, 5 exceptional hulls from 9.9 to 13.4 meters
Founded in 1978 by Winfried Herrman, owner of a window factory, and Josef Meltl, a nautical broker, Bavaria Yachts was born in Bavaria, originally known as Bavaria Yachtbau. Its first 6 models were to be watercraft, small hulls, even 6 meters in length, suitable for a public seeking fun and means suitable for small cruising. With 1985, however, the first ‘big’ hull, the 1130, to break through the 10-meter wall, would be born. From there on, as they say, it’s history.
Bavaria 31
specs: 9.98 x 2.97 m; 1999-2001; #N/A; J&J Design As the 20th century draws to a close, Bavaria is working to offer a new sub-10-meter cruiser that is capable of being both comfortable and seaworthy, and competitive in terms of price. The Bavaria 31 was born, designed by J&J -as is now the yard’s tradition- and absolutely successful in its intentions: it has a well-used interior, 4 berths divided into two separate cabins, a dinette that converts to a berth, and water lines that do not disappoint. Bulb drift. It would remain in the range for only two years, however, only to be revived in 2007 in an eponymous revival.
Bavaria 34
specs: 10.8 x 2.97 m; 1999; #N/A; J&J Design If with the Bavaria 31 the German shipyard was looking for a small family cruiser, with the Bavaria 34 peer it is looking instead at a hull that seeks instead to be far sportier. Split-rigged rig, ergonomic and streamlined deck and cockpit, and water lines set for fast cruising, a J&J classic. To satisfy its audience as best it can, the yard is also offering it in two distinct versions: a more racer, with a deep bulbous daggerboard, and a more cruising, shallow draft version. This will be a particularly popular hull.
Bavaria 1130
specs: 11.28 x 3.45 m; 1983; Axel Mohnhaupt With the Bavaria 1130 we step into the past and confront a major milestone for the yard. Designed by Axel Mohnhaupt, it is the seventh model to leave the factories, but it is the first to break through the 10-meter wall, and not by a small margin. This is 1983, just five years after the brand was founded, and Bavaria is churning out a hull that is profoundly a child of its time: ultra-short slips, wide beam and masthead rig, with a relatively small mainsail and huge overlapping genoa. It is an unexpected growth step, to say the least, and launches the yard into the world of the ‘big boys’.
Bavaria 41
specs: 12.83 x 3.99 m; 1995; J&J Design Twelve years after the Bavaria 1130, the yard launches another hull that is nothing short of innovative. It is the Bavaria 41, not only strong with comfortable interiors available in different layouts (3 or 4 cabins), but also technologically and philosophically advanced. First and foremost, already a hint of an open stern, which is matched by the bow, reinforced in Kevlar, and wooden, fiberglass-lined heads. What emerges is a deep-sea cruiser that became famous for its great hull rigidity, the merit of a then innovative design that later became an important quality standard.
Bavaria 42
specifications: 13.4 x 3.95 m; 1998-2001; J&J Design Also in collaboration with J&J Design, in ’98 the German shipyard introduced a new 40-footer, a cruiser with soft lines and a particularly airy and comfortable interior. It will be its marine qualities, however, that will make it particularly popular with many cruisers, strong in fact, with a particularly well-balanced sail plan and ergonomically optimized cockpit, ideal both for when you’re looking for the limit and for when relaxation is what counts.
