The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding alphabetically, then, here are Barberis and 5 of the best boats the yard has ever launched.

Barberis, 5 exceptional hulls from 7.1 to 12.5 meters

Positioned among the “greats” of Italian shipbuilding in the 1970s and 1980s, Barberis was in his own way an important pioneer of sailing in Italy. Founded in La Spezia by Giancarlo Barberis, he gave birth to such jewels as the small SciacchetrĆ  and the Show series, making use of such outstanding signatories as HarlĆ©, JĆØzĆØquel, Peterson and Vallicelli, to name a few. Overall, from the smallest daysailers to the big 80s cruisers, it is one of the shipyards that, truly, has been able to export Made in Italy in an international way.

specs: 7.20 x 2.45 m; 1971-1979; #248; Philippe HarlƩ The early 1970s were the great boom of ton-categories and, among the various hard-fought classes, there was a small IOR signed by HarlƩ that attracted attention. From this, adapted for the series by the designer himself, would come the Tequila, produced by both Barberis and the French Gilbert Marine. A small immense success. Agile, easy to steer and voluminous, despite what the numbers seemed to suggest, she soon became a favorite among small racer-cruisers, a hull within reach of many and as comfortable in the weekender role as among buoys.

Show 29

specs: 8.97 x 3.02 m; 1973-N/A; #50; Alain JĆØzĆØquel Edged hull on round hull, high freeboard and huge beam for the tonnage. This is Barberis’ little masterpiece, the Show 29, a revolutionary hull signed by the magician JĆØzĆØquel. The interior volumes are particularly large, making it a hull that can be appreciated even by cruisers, but the secret of the little 29′ lies in its performance: it is a small missile, with excellent marine performance and also capable of maintaining good stability. Available in two versions, regatta and cruising, she is a milestone of 1970s Italian shipbuilding, a little miracle of 9 meters short.

Show 34

specs: 10.26 x 3.31 m; 1974; #N/A; Doug Peterson With the Show 29 Barberis understood an essential ingredient in producing successful hulls. We are in the sailing boom and, what wins in regattas immediately finds a market in the series. A year after the little 29, it is thus the turn of the Show 34, signed by California archistar Doug Peterson. Needless to say, another milestone. Strong with particularly streamlined water lines, it immediately proves to be a particularly fast and smooth hull on the wave, as well as capable of offering up to 7 seats below deck. And it will also be a cult in America, where, moreover, Barberis will sell it in kit form, with a T-shaped cockpit to accommodate a large rudder wheel.

Show 38

specs: 11.48 x 3.83 m; 1981; #N/A; Fontana-Maletto-Navone This time relying on the Fontana-Maletto-Navone studio, in the early 1980s Barberis sought a 38-footer as comfortable in cruising as in racing, and thus capable of working well within the IOR tonnage. Thus was born the Show 38, a sporty, high-performance hull, moderate in displacement as well as buoyancy, but particularly agile and suitable for racing. The focus on cruising, however, present from the design stages, does not want to fail, and thus was born a hull that is yes racer, but equally suitable for comfort and family cruising.

Show 42

specs: 12.62 x 3.96 m; 1982; #N/A; Andrea Vallicelli The early 1980s are the years of Vallicelli’s great achievements and, one of them, is largely shared by Barberis. In fact, after the success of the Two Tonner “Blu Show,” the shipyard asked for a production variant. The Show 42 was born, with elegant lines, flush deck, double cockpit and large interior volumes. It is an exceptional cruiser-racer, strong with ample sail and agility of maneuver, an all-rounder, as they say, capable, however, of giving its best even in the lightest airs. Another cult from the Italian shipyard.
