For this edition of the VELA Cup, we have organized ourselves to welcome you and make the circuit stages unforgettable. We wanted to divide the many different boats in terms of size, type, “spirit” that participate into categories to give everyone a chance to experience the sea in their own way, compete fairly and have fun.
Cruising Boat, Sport Boat, Classic Boat
Again this year, all stages of the VELA Cup(find out about them in detail here) are open to any type of sailboat over three meters in overall length, with no limitations, and there are two categories: Cruising Boat and Sport Boat. In addition, the Classic Boat subgroup is reserved for all boats over 25 years old. When registering, you will be the one who chooses how to participate. Boats, once registered, will also be grouped into classes, according to overall length. Boats do not need special insurance or specific tonnage certificates to participate in the regatta/sailing event.
Cruising Boat
This is the pure fun category. Here all boats that use only and exclusively white sails, that is, inferred sails, jib mainsail and genoa only, can participate. We have kept this category with relaxation in mind, all types of boats, owner and crew participating in the VELA Cup. Want to have a noodle race? Take pictures of the scenery without being careful not to turn your spinnaker into candy? Do you want to participate to win but without bringing non-inferred sails to the boat? Are you small-crewed and just testing that new sailor for the season?
Perfect. The Cruising category is for you.
Sport Boat
This category, unlike Cruising, is designed for those who want to test themselves and race the boat: any type of sail is allowed: drifter, code zero, gennaker and spinnaker… This category is meant to give satisfaction to those who also participate to win, to racing boats or to those who want to test a boat rigged with a full set of sails. To a crew that wants to show their sailing skills. Always-this is one of the secrets of the VELA Cup-with healthy competitiveness and with the satisfaction of being able to win regardless of overall length thanks to the new compensation system.
Classic Boat
Also for this edition, the VELA Cup is Classic, like your boat. Sail with us and participate in the VELA Cup with your “Classic Boat” more than 25 years old. If you have a boat registered before 1999 you will also automatically participate in this category with an additional dedicated ranking and additional prizes.
What is the VELA Cup 2025
The VELA Cup is the regatta/festival circuit organized by the Giornale della Vela in the most beautiful places in Italy, from May to October with prizes for (almost) all participants. A perfect opportunity to experience the sea, whatever your spirit and boat: on the water and on land, experience a weekend of excitement.
