The Baltic 42 DP Darling D under sail with Mainsail, Spinnaker and Blooper

The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding alphabetically, then, here are Baltic and 5 of the best boats the shipyard has ever launched.

Baltic, 5 exceptional hulls from 11.8 to 15.2 meters

Baltic was born in Finland in 1973 with the aim of building better boats: they were to be lighter, better performing, and stronger. The first hull will be a bet, a statement signed Cuthbertson & Cassian. Thus was born the Baltic 46, a milestone not only for the yard, but for boating more generally. Within a few years Baltic Yachts becomes an industry benchmark, both for the series and for the One-Offs, which it will go on to build more and more. In parallel, collaborations were established with major designers-C&C, Judel/Vrolijk, Doug Peterson, S&S and Bill Tripp, to name a few-that would give rise to exceptional hulls destined to raise the bar ever higher. A history of growth and constant innovation, for that matter, that is still unbroken today.

Baltic 39

specifications: 11.81 x 3.83 m; 1977-1983; #74; C&C Design In 1977 C&C Design signed for Baltic what was to be its most successful model in production terms. It is the Baltic 39, a small masterpiece of 74 examples in 6 years. But it is not the numbers that make it an exceptional hull. If the construction, in the Baltic tradition, is impeccable, so is the design, a medium-displacement designed to be all-round and particularly bolinier. But it is the technique that makes her the exception: the 39′ is one of the first hulls whose performance is accentuated with the assistance of computer calculations and VPP studies, thus also offering exceptional data and polars to owners.

Baltic 42 DP

specs: 12.78 x 4.07 m; 1981-1985; #30; Doug Peterson With the Baltic 42 DP we are first introduced to collaborations between the yard and Doug Peterson. Thus was born a hull that was nothing short of exceptional: pleasing in lines, streamlined below the waterline and spacious below deck. With the 42DP, in short, we are confronted with a pure IOR, low rating and designed for maximized speed and comfort. The combination of comfort and performance will make it a small success from the value of as many as 30 examples produced in just 3 years: an 80s cult.

Baltic 43

specs: 13.21 x 4.20 m; 1986-2001; #47; Judel/Vrolijk After the already well-received 35-footer of 1984, Baltic relies a second time on the pens of the Judel/Vrolijk duo, this time to bring to life a 13-footer that is nothing short of remarkable. It is, indeed, the Baltic 43. The idea behind the project is what makes it a gem: to combine the signing duo’s incredible talents in the world of racing with the yard’s know-how and construction excellence. The result is an extremely lightweight hull, optimized for racing but without sacrificing interior and comfort, with slim, balanced water lines and ergonomically optimized deck and maneuvering tops. The icing on the cake is the brand’s offering, which also allows great flexibility on interior layouts. As many as 47 examples…

Baltic 46

specs: 14.09 x 4.17 m; 1973-1977; #11; C&C Design This is the model that introduces us to the ambition of a shipyard that, within a very few years, will already know how to reach the pinnacle. The Baltic 46 is, in fact, the first Baltic ever, a statement with which the shipyard presents itself to the world. It is well finished, it is marine, it is comfortable and it runs. But, above all, it is big, in no small part for the early 1970s. As soon as it is unveiled, it immediately appears as an extremely modern boat, technologically advanced for being a daughter of the series and highly regarded for performance. She is immediately worth 11 orders, which, for the size, is no small feat on her first debut. Fundamentally, it is a small masterpiece, a gamble that evidently paid off in full.

Baltic 50

specs: 15.24 x 4.34 m; 1998-2007; #11; Bill Tripp The Baltic 50 is a significant model on several fronts. Counted among the flagships of the 1990s, signed by the great Bill Tripp and produced in no fewer than 11 examples, it is the hull that most marks the turn of the millennium. It is the forerunner boat of the future; technological, luxurious and voluminous, it already has elements and stylistic features of the decade to come, starting with the open stern and double wheelhouse to maximize cockpit volumes. It is an exceptional performance cruiser, a testament both to Baltic’s innovative and qualitatively pinnacle tradition and to its later turn, aimed at luxury and the custom one-off world. It is the perfect closing of an era.
