There is a noble purpose in sailing, pursued for more than a hundred years. To make different sailing boats compete on equal terms. We, too, who organize the VELA Cup(we’ve unveiled all the dates of the 2025 stages here, you can already sign up), Italy’s busiest regatta/festival circuit that brings together, every year, hundreds of boats different in spirit, type, construction.
VELA Cup 2025, the big news
Hence the big news of the 2025 edition: the Sailing Newspaper’s new secret fee system that will make the VELA Cup even more balanced and fun and put all participating boats on a level playing field.
Whether you have a fast racer or a family crewed cruiser. Whether you sail a dinghy or a 70-footer, you can get some great satisfaction and fun at sea at the VELA Cup 2025 . Il compenso elimina le differenze tra imbarcazioni da crociera e barche preparate più da competizione. Inoltre, per le barche più “tirate”, ne assottiglia le disparità date dalle diverse lunghezze.
How the secret fee system works
But how does the system work? All boat details and data entered during registration (note: no tonnage certificate is required!) will allow us to clearly and precisely identify the boat in all its technical specifications and assign it a specific coefficient designed by our experts.
This number is used to compensate for the finishing time, i.e., once the race is over, the actual time will be multiplied by the coefficient and thus the compensated time will be obtained. In addition to the division of boats into the two categories Cruising and Sport (and the Classic Boat subcategory dedicated to boats over 25 years of age) and the further groupings into classes according to overall length, from this year this valuable new tool will balance the competition and make it even fairer.
Let’s take an example: an old Moody 42 in this way could keep up and beat a state-of-the-art Swan 78. And vice versa, it is the spirit of the SAIL Cup. . Il sistema è bilanciato, tutti sono alla pari.
