The world of daysailers is a galaxy that, especially in northern Europe, offers many interesting innovations that break out of the classic cruising boat mold. The daysailer by definition is the day outing boat, so there is much more freedom on the part of designers in being able to enhance the pure sailing part. With this idea comes a boat built in Austria, the Lago 26, 7.95 m long and 2.5 m wide, weighing around 700 kg, a boat that we could call “chameleon-like.”
Lago 26, the boat that changes
Designed by Hans Spitzauer, an Austrian sailor with a long Olympic career behind him, Lago 26 is presented in three very different versions: the Sword, the Keel and the Foil.
The Sword, with a reduced draft to 1.65, bulbless keel, equipped with ballast, is the family version, still maintains a sporty feel thanks to a powerful sail plan but prefers ease of use.
The Keel as the name suggests is the one with the bulb keel also offered in a lift version, a sail plan that includes a large mainsail quartered top, and the possibility of also using a trapeze to increase righting. In this version it really resembles one of those “Free Class” style lake boats,
The foil version, on the other hand, provides C-shaped and elevated foils on the rudders in order to make the boat 100% flying, and there is still a centreboard but without a bulb, similar to the Sword version in shape but with a draft of more than two meters.
