From route planning to communicating with other boaters to booking a berth in port: smartphone apps have become invaluable tools for anyone who goes to sea. So much so that it is now essential to be well equipped not only with the equipment on board, but also with the right apps on your smartphone or tablet. In addition to the classic navigation and weather apps, there are some lesser-known gems that can enrich the experience at sea and make every outing safer and more enjoyable. Here are three innovative apps, available for download on both Android and iOS smartphones, that deviate from the usual offerings, providing unique and useful features for sailors.

Sailsense Al Captain

Artificial intelligence is now coming to boating as well, and this seems to us – among many – to be one of its smartest applications. The software to download is called Sailsense, and it is designed to integrate all aspects of boat management, from knowing the health of systems and battery levels to turning on/off all on-board systems. With the new Al Captain feature, which will be available from January 2025, the app will be able to learn the boat’s sailing habits and optimal conditions to provide suggestions on routes, itineraries, safe anchorages, meters of chain to give and more.

Radio Garden

The Radio Garden radio project, started in 2013 in the Netherlands, is very simple: it allows a user to listen-via the web-to radio stations from around the world. In addition to the desktop interface, which can be reached from a PC, there is a very convenient application (available for any type of Android or iOS device) that allows one to view the globe and decide in which part of the world to pause to listen to local radio stations. You can listen to live streaming radio broadcasts from thousands of radio stations scattered all over the world, from Australia to the United States, passing through the Caribbean, Africa, the entire Asian continent and the Middle East.
If you are sailing on the other side of the world (or even just in the non-Italian Mediterranean) and are homesick, it can be a great way to keep in touch with Italy, and hear-as well as voices and music-radio news in the Italian language.

Nautide

This is another really comprehensive app to report, useful to install to have in one place a lot of information that can come in handy when navigating. It is called Nautide and is available for both Android and iOS smartphones. Inside this app are collected lots of data on tides, wind, weather, waves, fish activity, moon phase, and much more. Everything is organized in a clear and readable way, to be very easy and intuitive to consult when you need it.
The app is really useful when planning navigations, but also-for example-when looking for the perfect wave to surf, the best place to fish or the beach with the best wind and sea. Nautide is a free app, but most of the data is only available by signing up for a paid subscription.
