The ARC and the Ocean call, Italian sailing responds. As every year, the traditional Atlantic Rally for Cruisers, better known as ARC, the translatlantic race/sailing event, which will start Nov. 24 from Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, with 142 boats at the start. Among them are 8 Italian boats, confirming how much the ARC formula has always been liked in Italy, and every year it gathers new owners ready to take the Atlantic plunge.
ARC 2024 – Italians ready to go
There are 8 Italian boats that will participate in ARC 2024: Ahìnamà, Massimo Peschiulli’s Hanse 540e; Bellamossa, Massimo Guardigli’s C Cat 38; Ferdinand, Francesco Rongoni’s Neil 47; Glemm, Guido Rivolta’s Grand Soleil 46 LC; Maimai, Alessandro Fabbri’s Swan 75 FD; Maui 1 by Patrizio Schifa; Nazca 2, Paolo Marcucci’s Swan 82; and Whynot, Dario Calogero’s Swan 56.
The ARC, was born in 1985 when a Yachting World reporter, Jimmy Cornell, going to Las Palmas to watch the departure of the boats to the Caribbean, had an intuition, to create an event that would allow participants to cross the Atlantic all together, safely and having fun, he wasted no time and the following year 1986 started the first edition of the “ARC” with 200 boats.
The success of this transatlantic sail/race is just that, allowing even cruising boats, perhaps with crews of families or friends, to cross the Atlantic in a fleet, while also receiving adequate pre-departure training from the organizers. The 2800-mile route, from Gran Canaria to St. Lucia, is all in the trade winds, although in recent years these have often been disturbed. An event for everyone in short, which starts on November 24 and we will follow.
