The Vendée Globe has entered the Southern Hemisphere (passage to the equator without a record) and has a new leader. Charlie Dalin on Macif had come out of the equatorial calms delayed but literally opened the throttle in this early southeast trade wind by immediately retaking the lead. Dalin came out of the calms slightly farther east than Ruyant (who was leading until yesterday), so he had a chance to open the angle slightly to the wind and make more speed to pounce on the leaders and get back into the lead. The leading group of the Vendée Globe, which is about to take over from Fernando de Noronha, consists of 12 boats packed into less than 100 miles. We can consider this group, which includes all the favorites and also the women Davies, Mettreaux, Cremer, as the real first “breakaway” of this Vendée Globe. Complicated days for Giancarlo Pedote, who had a descent southward that was not easy, complicit in a positioning that did not prove to be too lucky: Prysmian seems to be coming out of the calms now and starting to accelerate in the Trade Wind southward, Pedote is now in 31st position, 400 miles behind the outriders. From his position he will be able to have a slightly more open and faster gait than the boats further west, with a chance to make up positions.
