The new regatta format of the VELA Cup 2025

The purpose of the VELA Cup regatta is still the same: to make all kinds of boats and crews compete on equal terms, according to their abilities. In 2025 the spirit remains the same, but with great improvements to respect, even more, the principle of giving all boats, cruising and racing, an equal opportunity to compete and have fun.

To compete on a level playing field, there is the new VELA Cup handicap.

For this “sacred” reason from 2025 the rankings will be drawn up with a new compensation system (VELA Cup secret handicap system) to balance as much as possible the differences in each boat’s performance. We at VELA Cup will take care of providing each boat with its handicap, for those who participate no bureaucratic demands or complications. So it will be even more rewarding and fair to participate in the VELA Cup, the chance of doing well increases, regardless of the type of boat and the ability to make it go as fast as possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktDcn7vW3ME

At the VELA Cup relax cruise style or Regatta version

A fair comparison, without stress but with healthy competitiveness is also guaranteed by the division into the two categories Cruising Boat and Sport Boat. Here, too, everything is easy, with no “jostling,” to satisfy everyone who participates with a boat in cruising configuration and those in racing configuration. How do we satisfy everyone, relaxed and avid? CRUISING BOAT. To entertain boats put by cruising and crews who prefer relaxation there is the Cruising Boat category, reserved for boats participating in the VELA Cup with white sails (inferred sails only), that is, without spinnaker, gennaker, Code 0. SPORT BOAT. To satisfy those who instead participate with a boat put up for racing and a crew that wants to show off their sailing skills there is the Sport Boat category, reserved for boats that participate with a set of sails that includes spinnaker, gennaker, Code 0 (non-inferred sails). To make the regatta even easier and more fun, the rankings for both categories are drawn up on the uniform basis of length.

If you have a boat over 25 years old, the VELA Cup is for you

CLASSIC BOAT. Last year’s novelty, which was very successful, was to draw up a special ranking reserved for the legendary “Classic Boats” i.e., boats more than 25 years old. Again, in the spirit of allowing all boats to compete as evenly and fairly as possible.

The fascinating course of the VELA Cup

Another unique feature of the VELA Cup is that it has a course designed specifically for each location, so that the beauty of the coastline can be enjoyed while at the same time the boat and crew can be tested in every gait: upwind, downwind, and slack. The regatta lasts a maximum of 4/5 hours.

The prize-giving party

The rankings remain secret until, around 6 p.m., the prize-giving party begins, right on the dock, where all participants become stars by taking the stage. This is followed by a cocktail party with music while exchanging photos of the VELA Cup that have reached everyone on Whatsapp. And if you didn’t place well, don’t worry, there are beautiful prizes raffled among all participants.

Free mooring and low-cost registration

There are other benefits for those who participate. In each VELA Cup 2025, the host marina provides, subject to availability, free mooring for two days. Registration is not, as is often the case, a bloodletting. It starts at 100 euros and you can easily register online at our website velacup.it.
