Alpa A42 – 12.33 m – It’s a Sparkman & Stephens, will that be enough?
The first of the boats used in today’s review is a ketch, an Alpa A42 (12.33 x 3.43 m). She is a historic Classic Boat by Giornale della Vela and is therefore destined to increase in value over time. The boat was introduced in 1973 as part of a new direction for the yard, which aimed to build boats suitable for offshore (bluewater) sailing. With a length of about 12 meters, the Alpa 42 is distinguished by its elegant and functional lines, designed by Sparkman & Stephens. Sixty-seven examples were built.
Alpa A42 is an often underestimated project. The tall dead work and old-fashioned bluewater lines may indeed mislead, and yet, the New York-based signature does its fine work under the waterline instead, with a Middle Sea Race win and unexpected performances at first glance.
The interior, in S&S’s original design, was intended to accommodate 10 beds. However, architect Alberto Mercati, in collaboration with the shipyard, reworked the design, reducing the capacity to 6 or 8 seats. Several solutions were presented, all capable of providing privacy, ample stowage space and unquestionable elegance. The model for sale is located in Naples and is from 1978.
Zuanelli Z42 Ketch – 12.35 m – An “Alpa 42 2.0”
The second of the used boats for sale on our market… is a direct heir to the first one we just told you about. In fact, we are talking about the two-masted Z42 Ketch (12.35 x 3.43 m) from the Zuanelli shipyard.
This is a boat with an important pedigree, because after the bankruptcy of the Alpa shipyard, Zuanelli purchased the mold of the Alpa A42 design from S&S and making some modifications related to rudder, ballast and interior, put the Z42 into production. This is a boat that has a good reputation in the used sailboat market due to the quality of construction. The model for sale, which can be seen in Bari, is from 1987 and is powered by a 72-horsepower Nanni Mercedes. The interior consists of two double cabins that can be converted into doubles, a cabin with bunk beds two bathrooms with showers and a comfortable dinette with two additional berths. The instrumentation has just been updated (2023).
Moody 42 CC Bluewater – 12.85 m – The house boat
Let’s stay in the world of embarkations designed for long sailing with the third of the used boats for sale in our marketplace. There is a Moody 42 CC (12.85 x 4.05 m) waiting for a new owner. CC stands for center cockpit, center cockpit. The boat, built by the British yard Marine Projects and designed by Bill Dixon was introduced in 1999 to replace the previous model, the Moody 40.
The Moody 42 features a powerful, sleek hull with a skeg rudder and a keel available in two draft options. The deckhouse is long and low with a windshield, while the stern features a small platform that makes the boat a center-cockpit model. The generous sail, which includes a 145 percent genoa, helps to compensate for the boat’s relatively high displacement, ensuring good performance even in rough seas. Below decks, the Moody 42 offers a cozy, well-finished ambience made of teak wood. It has two double cabins, with the master cabin located aft. The interior is designed to offer comfort while cruising, with soft sofas and well-organized spaces. The boat, which can be seen in eastern Liguria, is from 2008: equipped for long-range cruising, she is in the version with a master cabin aft with dedicated bathroom, two cabins forward and a guard berth.
Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 DS – 12.93 m – What XXL spaces!
We continue with the third of the boats used under the lens, a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42 DS (12.93 x 4.13 m). The third offspring of the Deck Saloon range and in production from 2006 to 2010, the Sun Odyssey 42 DS is spacious both above and below deck, maneuvers easily and has good equipment.
The overall design, by Italian Vittorio Garroni, follows the innovation begun with the Sun Odyssey 54 DS, and features the deck house carefully integrated to a deck layout with aft cockpit. The hull of the Sun Odyssey 42 DS, born from the pencil of Marc Lombard, has a hull characterized by taut lines, thin sections at the bow and very wide sections from amidships to extreme stern, and a waterline length of an impressive 11.60 meters, which in navigation is lengthened by almost a meter thanks to low exits over the water.
The designer therefore focused on a hull with high critical speed and strong form stability, so as to ensure good averages under motor and sail, while offering the space to make comfortable interiors. The hull is made, in the Jeanneau tradition, of solid laminate with E-glass mat mats and polyester resin.
The boat for sale, visible in Rosignano Solvay (Livorno), is from 2010. It has been regularly maintained and is in excellent condition. It is ready to sail right away.
Bavaria 42 Cruiser – 12.99 m – Comfort made boat
The fifth and last of the used boats for sale on our classifieds market is a comfortable cruising classic. It is a Bavaria 42 Cruiser (12.99 x 3.99 m), a 2004 design by Slovenian firm J&J and remained in production until 2008.
The Bavaria 42 Cruiser features a finished keel hull with bulb and paddle rudder, providing stability and maneuverability. Internally, the Bavaria 42 Cruiser offers well-organized and comfortable spaces. It is typically configured with three cabins and two bathrooms, making it ideal for families or groups of friends. The interior is finished in high-quality wood, creating a cozy atmosphere. The galley is fully equipped for extended cruising, while the living area is spacious with a dining table. Large windows allow natural light in, helping to make the interior spaces bright and airy. Due to its robustness and comfortable interior, the Bavaria 42 Cruiser is valued by sailors for its versatility and reliability in offshore cruising. The model for sale is from 2004 and can be seen dry-docked in eastern Liguria: equipped with every convenience, it has a cherry wood interior.
