Eve of the New Zealand – Britannia final: The Cup Trial returns.

Tomorrow is the big day, the first two matches valid for America’s Cup number 37 are scheduled in Barcelona, between defender Emirates Team New Zealand and the official challenger, Ineos Britannia, winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup. The city is ready for the big party; yesterday was the official opening ceremony of the America’s Cup, with the Old Pitcher meanwhile traveling, in its original version, from New Zealand to Spain, waiting to find out who will be the new holder. There is of course the great Kiwi unknown; we haven’t seen them racing since the Round Robins, and in recent weeks they have reportedly been working hard to make some

boat updates. Team New Zealand will certainly show up with a different rudder than it had in the Round Robins, and with foils, again quite extreme in the reduction of wing area, but which have been partly revised to make the boat more versatile.

We are in for a great match, a first between England and New Zealand in the history of the Cup, with the British not having contested a Cup final since 1964, while the Kiwis can be considered as the team that has most influenced the modern America’s Cup. It will not be easy to tell on the eve of the event which boat is the fastest, the odds are leaning in favor of the defender, but as we have seen at a certain level the difference is also made by the crews, and the challenge here looks stellar. On one side Peter Bulrling and Nathan Outteridge at the helm, on the other Ben Ainslie and Dylan Fletcher, just to name the 4 at the wheel, with a concentration of talent and Olympic medalists that is unparalleled in the sailing world, for a challenge that promises to be of a sidereal level.
