A Farr 80 of over 24 meters, on board many sailing champions, at the world’s most crowded regatta. Emergency will be present with a “A sail for Emergency” at Barcolana 56, the world’s largest sailing regatta to be held in the Gulf of Trieste on Sunday, October 13, combining the sporting challenge with the challenge for solidarity. The humanitarian association founded by Gino Strada, which has been providing free quality care to victims of war and poverty and promoting a culture of peace since 1994, will take part in the Barcolana to talk about the association’s activities around the world on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, to listen to the experience of the sea as lived by sailing champions and the project leader of Life Support, Emergency’s ship, and above all to participate in the regatta with an exceptional crew. An opportunity to be inspired, reflect, have fun and even donate.
Champions on board
Coming to support Emergency’s activities in Trieste will be Olympic bi-champion Caterina Banti, along with ocean sailing champions Ambrogio Beccaria, Alberto Bona, Alberto Riva and Giovanni Soldini. The crew will compete aboard Ancilla Domini, a 24.5-meter Farr 80, alternating at the helm.
Ancilla Domini, this is the name of the boat, is a 24.5-meter Farr 80 Grand Mistral model designed by Bruce Farr’s studio and built in France in the late 1990s to participate in an offshore racing circuit. In 2013 she was modified to be used for cruising as well. Interiors with all the comforts of a cruising boat were installed and the cockpit simplified to be more manageable in a small crew while maintaining racing performance due to the large sail area that has remained unchanged. The mast is 36 meters high, the mainsail is 190 square meters and the jib is 140. The boat has participated in all editions of the Barcolana over the past 10 plus years, and as its best result, it took sixth overall in 2022.
Gino Strada also participated in the Barcolana
This is the second time Emergency has participated in the Barcolana: in 2005 a Mini 6.50 competed with the association’s founder Gino Strada also on board.
Emergency also joins the Charity Program of the Barcolana with the project “A sail for Emergency.” Crews contributing to the fundraising as “ambassador crews” will be given a flag of the association to be displayed on the boat for the duration of the event. To leave a donation in support of the Association’s activities or to become an ambassador crew, simply log on to https://www.retedeldono.it/progetto/una-vela-emergency.
A sail for Emergency. The meeting with the public
A sporting and solidarity challenge, “A Sail for Emergency” is also a public meeting to be held on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m. at the Miela Theater in Trieste between sailors Caterina Banti, Ambrogio Beccaria, Giovanni Soldini, Carlo Maisano, project leader of Life support, Emergency’s search and rescue ship operating in the Mediterranean, and Annalisa Camilli, a journalist for Internazionale. At the center of the discussion with the sailors will be not only the challenges and the relationship with the elements, but also their direct experiences as shipwreck survivors and rescuers, because solidarity at sea is an unavoidable law.
The meeting will be preceded by a talk by Rossella Miccio, president of Emergency, on the association’s humanitarian commitment around the world: from Afghanistan to Sierra Leone, from Sudan to Uganda, the association has so far treated more than 13 million people affected by the effects of war, landmines and poverty. To make concrete the right to care enshrined in the Constitution, the association is also active in our country with fixed and mobile clinics and social branches in Milan, Brescia, Ragusa, Polistena, Sassari, Naples, and Castel Volturno.
The appointment is with free admission.
Until Oct. 13, the Emergency group of Trieste will also have its own booth at the village to present the association, its projects and its goals.
