More than 40 registered for VELA Cup Sicily, find out who’s there

Everything is ready for the last leg of the VELA Cup.
There are more than 40 entries, with boats of all sizes and shapes.
Among the entrants are several “thoroughbreds”,
fast and competitive boats that also participated in the RAR last week such as Colombre, the JPK 10.80 by Massimo Juris, a previous winner at the 2022 Middle Sea Race, Italian Offshore 2022 Champion and European DH ORC 2024 Champion; Fibra, Luca Trentini’s Open 35, an ocean prototype made for the 2009 OSTAR, with canting keel, dagger board and ballast; and JOY-GAIS, Giuseppe Cascino’s J122, a regular at VELA Cup Sicilia (she also appears on this year’s poster), which is in training for the 2024 Rolex Middle Sea Race in Malta.

Not only racing boats, the VELA Cup is open to everyone.
So there are also cruising boats such as Nerea, Giuseppe Gervasi’s Delphia 29, crewed by his family, Erato, Carmelo Fichera’s Tartan 4300, a stupendous American boat with classic lines, and Vicius, the Lanaverre Menhir of Massimo Enzo Fabbrici, head of the Spartivento base in Capo d’Orlando, who for the occasion enjoys the regatta from his beloved personal boat.

Finally, one cannot forget the Classic Boats, a special category of every VELA Cup reserved for boats at least 25 years old.
These include Carmelo Isgró’s Cassiopea, a laminated wood IOR class from the 1970s. The boat was restored thanks to a project of the MuMa Sea Museum Milazzo supported by PRADA and UNESCO-IOC as part of the SEA BEYOND project.
It is a project to restore an ancient sailboat made of laminated wood to make an“eco-sustainable oceanographic boat,” which will ply the Mediterranean Sea popularizing the beauty of our sea, to enhance and ultimately protect it.
The boat was unveiled on September 30, 2024 in Barcelona during the 37th America’s Cup together with Luna Rossa.
