In the boating world, too, the focus on sustainability is growing exponentially, with the industry moving toward different ecological solutions to try to make new products without compromising performance. Armare Ropes, an Italian company that manufactures ropes and technical ropes for the boating industry (and has also made ropes for Emirates Team New Zealand), has taken a big step towards this transformation.
In fact, it is the first company in the world in the nautical field to certify two EPDs(Environmental Product Declarations) of its components, and to create a tool to verify theenvironmental footprint of its ropes.
Let’s see what this certification means and why it is such an important innovation in the nautical landscape.
What is EPD certification
EPD, which stands forEnvironmental Product Declaration, is a certification that provides transparent and clear information about theenvironmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle.
It is issued after adetailed analysis that evaluates aspects such as resource consumption, CO2 emissions, energy used and waste generation, helping consumers make more sustainable choices, and analyzing the entire production chain of a product.
Thus, EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) certified tops are the result of a process that evaluates and certifies the entire life cycle of tops in terms of their environmental impact.
This internationally recognized declaration is a guarantee of transparency and environmental responsibility, since it is issued only after a thorough analysis of the impact of production.
To receive this certification were – for now – the Star (in 10 mm diameter) and Dyneforce 78 (in 6 mm diameter) ropes.
How much do Armare Ropes pollute
Engineers at Armare Ropes have created anEnvironmental Footprint Calculator (EFC) that provides an intuitive tool for analyzing and comparing the technical and ecological performance of Armare Ropes.
The tool not only calculates the carbon footprint, but offers a broader view of the overall environmental impact by assessing the entire life cycle(LCA – Life Cycle Assessment).
Thanks to this tool, you can make informed decisions when purchasing, especially if you want to reduce the ecological impact of the Armare products you choose (but without compromising their efficiency).
How to use the calculator
The calculator is based on the same mathematical model as Armare’s verified EPDs, and provides specific analyses to assess the Ecodesign of ropes of different diameters, calculating the environmental impact of 100 meters of rope.
Each rope produced by Armare can be provided with information on its environmental footprint, and specific EPDs can be issued on other products upon request, depending on customer needs.
