Still spectacular conditions on the race course in Barcelona for the Louis Vuitton Cup final , with 16-20 knots of southwest. It comes off as another day for strong hearts, with Luna Rossa giving up in the first race due to a new failure (started by a failure to move the port arm and ended with heavy noose diving) that raises questions about the boat’s reliability, but she reacts again in the second race and finds the 4-4 mark.
We talk about it at 6:30 p.m. at Process of the Cup with Luca Bassani (founder Wally Yachts), Giovanni Ceccarelli (one of Italy’s most successful designers), Federico Albano (performance analyst from Formulauno Passion), Simone Malagugini (Drylaps Team), Ida Castiglioni (first Italian woman to cross the Ocean in a race).
Luna Rossa vs. Britannia – match 7
Ineos enters port tack, Luna Rossa with some delay starboard tack. Unusual pattern of Britannia coming off the left tack line to burn time and then back into the right side of the box.
However, the British seem to leave the right to the Italian boat.
The lateral distance coming out of the start is minimal, not an easy position for Luna rossa, but she manages to hold well from upwind to the boundary. Luna Rossa veers as close as possible to the British to try to bother from downwind, until it blows Britannia, which does not hold the duel.
Good news for the Italians.
At the next crossing, however, it is Britannia ahead and she threads the Gate first with only one second to spare. Something is wrong on the Italian boat, already from the previous left tack edge appeared slow, in the lee the boat makes a heavy touch down and the race of the Italian boat ends here.
The jib rail covers open due to noose diving, and Luna Rossa’s problem seems serious, Italians forced to retire and ask for shore team assistance.
Luna Rossa vs. Britannia – match 8
Luna Rossa licks her wounds and returns to the fight after shore team intervention.
Enter port tack, Britannia to starboard.
Everything looks good now for the Italian boat.
Glaring mistake by Ineos that touches the boundary and takes penalty.
Immediately a big lead then for Luna.
Quiet first upwind for Team Prada, which manages the advantage accumulated immediately at the start because of the British mistake. Well in phase Luna Rossa in the first stern, which grants a further small advantage to the Italian boat.
At the stern gate Ineos manages to separate and go right, a move that however does not yield any particular gains. She does not mark Luna Rossa tightly, however, still conceding separations to Britannia, which comes in at the second windward gate with a new split.
It does not mark the Italian boat downwind either, and Ineos comes close.
The third windward mark begins with the British fairly close, Luna Rossa this time tacking a few times on the sails and managing to consolidate the lead and give herself a quiet third stern with less pressure from the opponent.
Ineos goes to the right for the last upwind, but does not seem to be able to come back just by performance and the race goes by without any particular excitement.
There is no more time for Ben Ainslie to recover, Luna Rossa goes on to hit 4-4 at the end of another day for strong hearts. Mauro Giuffrè
