Everyone wants retractable bollards for their boat deck.
The retractable bollards
In fact, one of the innovations that has taken hold more and more in bollard design, to the point that today we almost always find them made this way, is the retractable design.
With electrical, hydraulic, or simply mechanical systems, these bollards disappear or “camouflage” when they are not to be used.
Apparently, the first person to invent a flush deck bollard was Giulio Versari of Liguria, who marketed the first model produced for Versari-Delmonte of Rapallo (now acquired by Foresti & Suardi) in the early 1990s.
This allows for a clean, smooth deck as is fashionable today with flush decks, but there is also a safety issue.
Making the bollard disappear once the lines are removed is not only purely cosmetic, but it allows you to avoid-for example-someone tripping on it or colliding with it, or even having a line accidentally twisted on it.
It seems that it was a friend’s broken foot from a bollard that inspired Giulio Versari to invent the retractable bollard.
Below are four models from some of Italy’s leading bollard manufacturers.
Ubi Maior – BTS
Aluminum bollard with a modern design, square and minimal lines.
It comes in different sizes-from 25 to 43 centimeters in length-and is capable of bearing loads from 3,300 to 7,500 kilograms.
Antal – Roller
It is not really a retractable bollard; in fact, it is only the outer horns that disappear once rotated.
Available in two finishes, silver and black, and four sizes, for boats up to 21 meters.
Osculati – Ghost II
Osculati’s Ghost II retractable bollard has an ergonomic shape that makes it easy to pull out when closed.
In addition, fluorinated rubber O-rings allow the mechanism to slide smoothly.
Foresti & Suardi – Versari Collection Concealed Cleats
The first retractable bollard, designed by Giulio Versari for Versari-Delmonte, now acquired by Foresti & Suardi.
The design is certainly modern and still relevant today, as is the functionality.
