Bona and Alberto Riva on IBSA Alberto Bona and IBSA say goodbye after three years together and end their adventure on a high note, taking a third place in the Normandy Channel Race, a regatta that the skipper from Turin raced as a pair with Alberto Riva.
A partnership that brought important results, with Bona becoming one of the top Class 40 skippers.
Alberto Bona – How it went at Normandy
Due to a slow-motion start, they had to recover a comfortable position on the leaderboard in the first hours, from which to start the race to install themselves in the top places. Solent and the English coast saw them firmly in the top five, as did the passage to Tuksar Rock.
The descent down the Irish coast occupied an intense night of sailing in which the two skippers attacked their opponents, reaching the Fastnet with good speeds, until they reached third position and defended it along the route back to the Channel.
The finish was also very challenging, with the fourth place finisher, Sogestran Seafrigo, crossing the finish line only five minutes behind and a few tenths of a mile behind Class40 IBSA.
What does the future hold?
It is no mystery that for some time now Alberto Bona has been thinking about the category jump, towards the Imoca 60 class, perhaps with a crewed project in view of The OceaN race, where 60s are also allowed.
A natural transition for ocean sailors who have been at the top in the Class 40s, and who see the Imocas as the most logical continuation of their careers.
Bona could be a future new entry, and who knows if Ambrogio Beccaria also aims to do the same, to bring a real blue wave to the Imoca 60s.
