BarcolanafleetWhen you write Barcolana, you read “the world’s largest regatta,” as attested by the Guinness World Record in 2018, when on the occasion of the event’s 50th anniversary, 2,869 boats lined the starting line.
A line 2 1/2 nautical miles long, where world-class helmsmen, passionate racers and cruisers compete side by side – or rather, fender to fender – driven by a common love of the sea and the pleasure of experiencing an event marked by fun and sharing.
This is the spirit that, 56 years ago, led a group of friends from the marina in Barcola to ask the authorities for permission to organize a regatta.
They were granted a date at the end of the season, the second Sunday in October.
Those friends began to go around the sailing clubs, spreading invitations and promising curious prizes, such as bottles of wine.
Eventually fifty-one responded, and on a sunny Sunday with a light southwesterly wind-the “garbin,” as the fishermen of these areas call it-the first Barcolana took off.
That spirit of sharing and passion has remained unchanged since that day in 1969.
Every year, on the second Sunday in October, Trieste and its gulf are transformed into Europe’s sailing capital.
Hundreds of thousands of people arrive from every corner of Italy and the world to witness a unique spectacle, breathing in the passion for the sea just by walking along the quays.
