day of the Louis Vuitton Cup semifinals, with the Barcelona race course once again affected by light winds, between 6 and 8 knots from the south. Difficult conditions for the AC 75s, who will have to deal with the risk of falling off the foils.
Potentially decisive day, with the two semifinals deadlocked at 4-0 and the first Match Points up for grabs.
The day opens with a surprise, Alinghi scores a point against Britannia in a race sailed almost exclusively in displacement, a fact that portends a very open race between Luna Rossa and American Magic.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli vs. American magic
American Magic enters tacking to port, Luna to starboard.
Given the little wind, the boats are more cautious in prestart keeping their distance and not engaging.
However, Luna Rossa manages to gain the upper hand and get off theline faster, taking the lead at the first crossing.
It’s a 17-second margin at the first gate, with Luna Rossa looking more at ease in the little wind.
In the stern, the Italian boat’s gybe angles seem to be better, confirming its good propensity in the little wind.
Indeed, the lead at the Stern Gate remains unchanged, with American Magic unable to shorten the gap.
In the second windward mark, however, Luna rossa is forced to concede a wide separation and AmericanMagic makes a comeback from the right, until crossing in front.
Thriller moment, because Luna Rossa to let water to the Italian boat takes a penalty.
At the next crossing, however, it is Luna with starboard tack and she gets ahead again.
But it is still penalty to Luna Rossa at the next crossing, on a classic left/starboard tack where the Italian boat again misjudges the distances. American Magic then closes ahead at the second windward mark, and the third stern promises to be fiery at this point.
The Americans hold the lead and the arrival at the stern gate is tight, both choose the same gate, American Magic is a hair ahead and Luna Rossa ends up in the garbage falling off the foils.
Thus go the Americans on the run, at this point with a huge margin and Luna Rossa still in displacement mode.
The race effectively closed, the NYYC team wins, having had the merit of making far fewer mistakes than the Italian team.
The series goes to 4-1. We talk about it at 6:30 p.m. on Il Processo alla Coppa, Mauro Giuffrè and Luca Sordelli’s guests will be Giovanni Ceccarelli (successful designer with two America’s Cup challenges behind him), Medea Falcioni (iQfoil World and European Junior champion), Luca Bassani (Wally Yachts founder), Ida Castiglioni (first Italian woman to cross the Ocean in a regatta), Federico Albano (Formula1passion race designer and analyst).
