Cork has a thousand-year history and hi-tech material characteristics.
The search for materials that can make boats, whether sailing or motor boats, perform and compete is unstoppable.
This edition of the America’s Cup shows us how the search for performance and sustainability can lead to the rediscovery of a raw material with a history dating back thousands of years and an innate versatility that brings innovation to the many fields of application where it is used, cork.
Cork made from the barks of Quercus Suber, an extraordinary oak tree that lives mainly in the Mediterranean area, possesses a combination of lightness, elasticity and strength that makes it extremely versatile.
Due to its cellular structure, cork is impermeable to liquids and gases, thermal and acoustic insulating, and fire resistant.
These characteristics make it ideal for advanced applications in the aerospace and marine industries.
In aerospace, cork is used as a thermal insulator in space shuttles, protecting internal components from high temperatures during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere.
Its ability to absorb shock and vibration also makes it a valuable material for the casing of satellites and other space devices.
In the nautical industry, cork is used in yacht and boat construction for siding and flooring.
Its waterproof and non-slip properties, combined with its resistance to weathering and salt water, ensure durability and safety.
In addition, the use of cork contributes to environmental sustainability, as it is a renewable and biodegradable material.
In 2013, Sace Components, an Italian company with more than 40 years of experience in cork processing, introduced to the marine market, MarineCork, cork decking that stands out as one of the most sustainable, innovative and reliable solutions on the market.
MarineCork is the result of careful research and development aimed at making the most of the exceptional properties of cork and putting them at the service of a technical sector such as boating, which in addition to technicality requires elegant and comfortable solutions.
In-depth knowledge of the raw material and the industry enable the MarineCork team to find technical solutions that meet the needs of owners and shipyards of motor, sailing and racing boats.
Many projects have been completed and are in the works.
Azimut Yachts chose MarineCork for the decking of the Seadeck line, hybrid yachts that offer a new concept of elegance, comfort and sustainability.
Persico Marine, in a continuous search for new solutions that can enable them to achieve high performance, has found in MarineCork the sustainable and high-performance
solution that can enhance the beauty of their lines.
Indeed, it will be on board the new Persico Cat 72.
