It’s September, in fact, and the Vele d’Epoca di Imperia returns, officially kicking off tomorrow, 11-09-2024.
But, watch out, because this edition of the
Imperia International Sailing Week 2024 will bring important news. Let’s start with the basics though: starring in the event, scheduled from the 11th to the 15th of the month, two main regattas, the Imperia Cup 2024, reserved for the legendary 8mR, International Eight Meters Class (Olympic class from 1908 to 1936), and the Vele D’Epoca 2024, the regatta dedicated to vintage and classic boats, spirits of tradition, replicas, big boats and IOR classics.
Vintage Sails 2024
About 50 boats in the water for the show, 50 hulls that are also profoundly different from each other, that is, a rare opportunity not only to be able to admire nautical milestones, but also to grasp, in one place, their evolution and mutations, both design and philosophical.
The Vele d’Epoca di Imperia, also in this 2024 will therefore be a good opportunity for many enthusiasts and, with this editions, announce an important novelty for the years to come: from 2025, on a biennial basis, new Classic Boats will join the Imperia International Sailing Week.
Nautor Swan, in fact, launches the start of a new project intended to celebrate the brand’s heritage, the Swan Classic fleet, composed of hulls signed Sparkman & Stephens, German Frers and Ron Holland. In anticipation of the event, which we will follow and tell you about from Imperia, here are classes and programs of Imperia International Sailing Week 2024.
Imperia International Sailing Week, 2024 program
Official opening for Wednesday, September 11, with the event featuring its opening ceremony at 5:30 p.m. at Calata Anselmi.
From 12, the start of the regattas, with a program destined to last until Sunday 15, with a maximum of 8 races to be contested.
Two, the regattas we will be able to see.
On the one hand, in fact, the Imperia Cup 2024, destined for the legendary 8 Meters International Tonnage; on the other, the Vele d’Epoca 2024, increasingly richer in participation, given the addition of the Classic IOR introduced with the last edition. Departure of the regattas, 11:00 a.m. each morning, so much for the grand parade at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, before the last scheduled trials, on the very closing day of the event.
Not only events on the water, however, because Imperia International Sailing Week will also consist of several side events designed to engage the public, the citizenry and all the racers.
Games, shows and events, including the participation of Besana to present two of his recent books, will in fact be the common thread that will unite regattas and “party” in this five-day event dedicated to sailing.

Vintage Sails 2024: Classes.
Looking beyond the program, however, the key to the whole thing are the hulls on the water.
On the one hand, the legendary 8 Meters International Tonnage, on the other, a whole fleet of exceptional hulls, about 50 or so in total, divided on the different and now well-known classes. Imperia will thus see the “Epoca” hulls, built before 1950, then the “Classics,” pre-1976 and the Classic IORs, built between 1970 and 1984.
These are joined by the Big Boats class, exceeding 25 meters in length, and the Spirit of Tradition class, with LOAs exceeding 10 meters.
