Day of verdicts in Barcelona, with the Louis Vuitton Cup round robins going into the archives and delineating the grid for the semifinals.
Not resurrected in the light wind were the French, who lost decisively to Britannia, Orient Excpress is thus the first union to leave Barcelona.
All attention is then on the Britannia-Luna Rossa tiebreaker for the victory of the round.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli vs Britannia Britannia voluntarily stays over the line for much of the pre-start, then diving after Luna Rossa.
Both boats stay in the upper area of the box, both boats seem concerned about not falling off the foils, and an even start ensues, with the boats fairly separated, but Britannia to right windward.
Immediately threatening Britannia coming off the line, very fast, with the Brits managing to tack in the face of the Italian boat by placing the first shot.
Luna Rossa tries to contain the gap by taking advantage of its good performance in light winds, but the British hold and this time they seem to have at least as much as the Italians if not god more.
It is 18 seconds behind Luna Rossa at the first gate.
Brits are solid in the stern as well, with the gap increasing to 29 seconds.
Ben Ainslie seals the upwind gate, with Luna Rossa tacking and counter tacking but unable to sew up enough, in fact losing a few more tens of meters and the gap rising to 33 seconds.
The alarming thing for Luna Rossa is that the gap climbs steadily, with the Italian boat unable to give the impression of ever coming back. Ineos Britannia goes on to win with ease a match with practically no history, overturning the standings and giving the Round Robin victory, after a solid comeback that lasted the entire turn.
It will then be Ben Ainslie who will choose his opponent for the semifinals, Luna Rossa in all likelihood will have to face American Magic at this point. We talk about it at 6:30 p.m. at Processo alla Coppa, for a very hot episode: Mauro Giuffrè’s guests will be Luca Bassani, Paolo Semeraro, Federico Albano, Medea Falcioni. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tracN9kiZ5c
