Disturbance transiting the Catalan coast that changes the weather conditions on the America’s Cup race course in Barcelona for the fifth day of the Louis Vuitton Cup: rain, shore wind between 8 and 15 knots, fluctuating in direction and intensity, and short wave.
It started immediately with a match without tomorrow, between Alinghi Red Bull Racing and Orient Express Racing Team, with the Swiss after an excellent start immediately closing the contest due to a technical problem of the French.
A crucial point for the Swiss.
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli vs. Emirates Team New Zealand
Kiwis tack to port, Moon to starboard, apparently jib 3 for both boats.
New Zealanders heading into the pre-start at the starboard boundary.
Both boats position themselves over the starboard lyline, with Luna upwind trying to push her opponent by leaning behind, the Kiwis responding.
Luna Rossa then tries to pass over New Zealand’s bow, with Spithill taking a big risk that works, however: the Kiwis tack into the Italian boat’s waste and fall off the foils, losing the start.
Upwind with crazy speeds of the two boats exceeding 41 knots, perhaps the highest speed ever recorded by the AC 75 upwind.
Luna having a lead of almost 400 meters to administer after the won start, which turns into 16 seconds at the Gate.
Very fast stern, with Luna Rossa touching 50 knots and seeming faster than the New Zealanders as peaks, the Kiwis however recover 4 seconds and shorten the gap to 12.
The Italian boat administers in the second upwind, still with good speed, and gains ground with the lead rising to 23 seconds.
Stern with several wind shifts and changes of intensity, with the Kiwis, however, unable to recover rather they see the gap rise to 31 seconds.
Heavy rain on the boats for the last upwind, with the wind continuing to swing.
However, the Italian cockpit is not trembling, with Bruni and Spithill looking like they are on a good day and a boat with very convincing performances against the Kiwis.
Race effectively closed for Team Prada, which goes on to win for the first time in this edition of the America’s Cup against Team New Zealand.
Not before a near-ending triller, lightning raining down around the race course and the Kiwis deciding to retire early.
The Race Committee then decides to quickly send everyone ashore to play it safe.
Luna Rossa gets back there after a most convincing race, imposing herself on the defender: it doesn’t count for much because there are no points at stake, but it is a signal towards Team New Zealand and all the other challengers.
Luna Rossa is there. We talk about it at 6:30 p.m. on Processo alla Coppa: guests of Mauro Giuffrè and Luca Sordelli will be Federico Albano, Ida Castiglioni, Medea Falcioni and Luca Bassani. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL2-PX4H7GM
