Dan Lenard, a famous superyacht designer as well as an off-the-chart sailor, is at it again with another venture.
After sailing solo across the Atlantic Ocean without instruments, compasses, GPS or engine, yesterday he set off on another of his adventures: 350 miles solo and unassisted on an ILCA (formerly Laser) dinghy.
Dan Lenard the sailor outside the choir
Dan Lenard in addition to being a very famous designer, as co-founder, together with Carlo Nuvolari-Duodo, of the Nuvolari Lenard naval design studio, a great Italian excellence that has put its signature on the most avant-garde megayachts, from Perini to Oceanco, from Palmer Johnson to Ferretti, is a sailor with a backbone.
As the initiator of the Vela Code movement, which aims to promote a sustainable code of conduct for sailors and, more generally, for anyone who goes to sea, he has been salvaging and reusing boats for his ventures for years .
His latest challenge is to Break the Guinness World Record for the longest solo, unassisted sailing aboard a dinghy.
Dan Lenard’s new challenge
Leaving yesterday, Sunday, Sept. 1, from Izola, a Slovenian coastal town, Dan Lenard will face the sea on an ILCA 7 Performance Sail Australia (Australian-made, ed.), strictly unassisted.
To comply with the principles of the Vela Code, sailing will be zero emissions and with no single-use plastic packaging on board; no water in plastic bottles, so no plastic waste during the voyage. Everything needed for five days has been packed and secured on the boat.
Lenard aims to set a new record for the longest solo, unassisted sailing on a dinghy, attempting to travel approximately 350 nautical miles. James Barbaro
