The IOR was the Golden Age of sailing, a 30-year period of discoveries, pulled hulls and one-offs, a period of “pop” racing and inimitable boats.
To best remember it and emphasize its value, the Journal of Sailing has launched a campaign to celebrate and highlight so many of these great boats, milestones of sailing and boating as we know it today.
So, an appeal to all enthusiasts: point out to us where the IOR cult greats are and what state they are in, we will be grateful. The goal is to include these boats in our “registry” of Classic Boats by Journal of Sailing (we explain below how to do that). BEWARE, however, putting them on the registry does not only mean census them, it also means valuing all those boats that have a history and a pedigree that allows us to highlight their real historical value-exactly as happens in the world of cars and real estate-to give them back the status they really deserve, and thus their true value. AYour boat, too, can now get the recognition it deserves and acquire the value it deserves.
Tell us about your Classic Boat!
The IOR was a scaled peak, a unique period populated by hulls and characters that were nothing short of legendary. A period that has remained in the hearts of many, both the nostalgic and those who, instead, look back seeing a world of opportunities perhaps gone. The IOR was (perhaps) the time of the purest sailing, the time of the most fearsome offshore races and round-the-world tours of our own “Brancaleone Armies.” It was the world of such personalities and great gentlemen as Raul Gardini, of Sir Peter Blake and Giorgio Falck. But it was also the world of sailors, the real ones, as well as the many Sunday sailors who nevertheless put their bodies and souls into it, always racing and full of passion and stories to share.
Therefore, all the more reason why we want to celebrate your IOR memories as well.
Tell us anecdotes, experiences and memories in the comments, either off your own bat, or in case the boats you see in the next articles unlock memories you don’t want to miss.
Now, though, the census: a bwe have created an online archive of your Classic Boats in which you can enter both your production boat and your One Off and its history and browse through many others like a great encyclopedia of sailing history. Here’s how it works.
Your Classic Boats – Requirements
Let’s start with the basic requirements. As we have already told you in our previous call, in which we already celebrated some of these icons(you can find it HERE) it only needs to be a racing boat developed under IOR rule or, if developed before, it has raced in IOR anyway, i.e. between the late 1960s and very early 1990s. Of course, signature and yard also matter, because not all boats are the same, so remember the years, yards and signatures of the great masters.
What is needed?
- Boat Name and Model;
- Type – Indicate whether it is a series project or a One off;
- A detailed description of the boat; including racing, if it is an IOR and you have knowledge of it
- One or more photos;
- Shipbuilder, year of launching, overall length and maximum beam; designer
- Your email and a call sign.
- ENTER YOUR CLASSIC BOAT NOW!
