As many as 15 baby sailors in the Techno 293 class participating in the Primavela Cup in Genoa reported symptoms of intoxication after swimming in Punta Vagno.
Parents filed a complaint with the city’s police headquarters. It was supposed to be a sailing festival dedicated to the youth of sailing, racing and sports, but instead it turned into a minor drama.
It happened during the 2024 edition of the Primavela Cup scheduled to take place in Genoa Aug. 26-28.
The historic event organized by the Italian Sailing Federation and a number of Ligurian sailing clubs has been a “cult” youth sailing event for years and brings together hundreds of young athletes from all over Italy who compete in Techno 293, Optimist, O’pen Skiff, and Waszp classes.
What happened this year, however, partly spoiled the party.
On Monday, August 26, there was not enough wind and the Techno 293 class races were cancelled.
Not even being able to practice, the baby sailors therefore decided to swim in the waters in front of the small beach of Punta Vagno, close to the regatta course and a few hundred meters from the Genoa Fairgrounds.
Bitter parents want to go all the way…
A few hours later, however, some of them, as many as 15 began to experience symptoms of intoxication, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Racing suspended for the Techno 293 class.
Five more serious children were admitted to Gaslini Hospital for immediate treatment. The parents of the athletes participating in the Primavela Cup, rather worried and upset by the affair, want to see it through.
