The old adage “good blood doesn’t lie” also applies in sailing.
As evidenced by the recent winning of the Nacra 15 World Championship title by Lorenzo Sirena, son of the great Max at the helm of Luna Rossa currently engaged in the 37th America’s Cup. Even in sailing, being a “child of the art” has its advantages and gives from an early age a number of great opportunities.
One gets on board right away, gets to know boats and equipment, learns early on the art of adapting to every situation, and above all breathes that great feeling of freedom that sailing gives.
All this applies even if you have racing parents, great sportsmen who have competition in their blood.
In that case, however, to really follow in their footsteps, and perhaps repeat their successes, this privileged heritage is not enough.
You have to add just as much passion and a good dose of talent.
Two elements that Lorenzo Sirena certainly does not lack.
His dad, Max Sirena, is no ordinary sailor, and his is a “heavy” name in the international environment.
In fact, at 53 years old, he is the Team Director and Skipper of “Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli” with which he is about to take on his 8th America’s Cup in Barcelona, Spain.
Lorenzo, on the other hand, is only 15 years old, but he has already begun to take great satisfaction in the competitive arena.
At 15 years old already a prestigious world title
In fact, paired with Alice Dessy just over a month ago, Lorenzo won the youth world title in the Nacra 15 class.
The two young sailors coached by Gigi Picciau of the Italian Sailing Federation and Marcella Mamusa of the Cagliari Yacht Club sailed a great final of the championship held July 13-20 in the waters of Riva del Garda.
And at the end of a close fight with the French crew favored for the title, they brought home a prestigious success in a class like the Nacra 15 that is preparatory to the Nacra 17, the one with which Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti won the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
In short, a fine victory for Mr. Luna Rossa’s protégé, who on his Instagram profile did not fail to recount all his satisfaction: “It was a very hard-fought championship, until the last race,” he commented in a hot post, “I am very satisfied with this performance and I noticed great improvements compared to the last races. But I know there is a lot of work to do, though… I want to thank my family first of all! And then all the Italian Nacra15 team and our sparring partners ‘@ita197nacra15’, without them it would have been impossible!”
An enthusiasm that, we are sure, was also shared by dad Max, who is currently busy with the preliminary races of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
First steps on the Optimist in the waters of Auckland
After all, Lorenzo Sirena took his first steps into the world of Optimist class racing when he was just 8 years old, training in the home of Russel Coutts and Peter Burling, the city of Auckland, New Zealand, while his father juggled match racing in the Hauraki Gulf for the 36th Ameria’s Cup.
And the champion’s mentality this baby helmsman already shows it all.
To those who ask him for advice for all those children who want to start sailing competitively, he says, “Never throw yourself down, we may start last, but just have the desire and passion that you can always improve.”
Does that remind you of anyone?
