It was the most awaited day for Italian sailing in Marseille, the day of the Nacra 17 medals, ILCA and Kite finals, but the appointment lacked a very important protagonist: the wind.
Capricious, light, erratic, the breeze over Marseille today was in a mood, making the day complicated for sailors and race committee.
Skipping the kite medal races, skipping the Nacra medal race, all postponed until tomorrow, the only ones held were those of the ILCAs.
ILCA Medal Race – Well done Chiara and Lorenzo!
Chiara Benini Floriani’s Olympics ends in the best possible way, winning the medal race and ending her Olympic week in fifth place, posting the best ever result for Italian sailing in the ILCA/Laser.
The medal could only come by winning the medal race and hoping for an interlocking set of results that did not come.
Few regrets for the Italian athlete, very young and at her Olympic debut, who ends an excellent participation in the Paris/Marseille Games.
Lorenzo Chiavarini also did well, ending the Olympics in ninth place after seventh in the medal race.
There was no chance to medal for the Italian in this final.
Nacra 17 – What happens now?
It’s back on the water tomorrow, the last day to contest the Nacra 17 medal races.
The rules speak clearly, in case the finals cannot be held, the medals will be awarded according to the ranking accrued in the series of preliminary races, so with Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti in the lead.
The weather forecast, however, seems to suggest, with the arrival of a Mistral flow, that the regatta tomorrow may take place in regular wind conditions.
