Do you dream of an ultimate boat for “long” sailing?
The Italian shipyard Stem Marine has designed the Stem 50 for you, a new 16-meter hi-tech aluminum boat that you can outfit however you want.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new Made in Italy boat.
Stem 50 – The aluminum bluewater tailored just for you
A sailor’s life evolves over time, always on the edge of practical experience, accumulated miles, dreams and an absolute love of going to sea.
In this constant evolution, technical and human, sailors develop a deep relationship with the boats on which they sail.
Over time, they choose “traveling companions” that are increasingly in line with their own needs, style and sailing ambitions.
Cabin cruisers from the standard shipbuilding industry generally succeed in fully satisfying most owners.
There are sailors, however, who are particularly demanding and at some point are no longer satisfied with the compromises offered in series construction.
What they want is a “custom” boat that is customized across the board and can reflect the way they sail.
Aluminum, perfect for bluewater
Take for example a sailor in his 45-50s who is sailing with his family.
Years of cruising behind him, accustomed by now to life at sea and with an increasingly precise idea of what he wants from the boat in terms of size, equipment, fittings, facilities and living space.
If his goal is long sailings, in the Mediterranean but also in the ocean, and why not, a round-the-world voyage, then this owner will aim for complete autonomy, maximum safety, and the best that technology can offer him.
Of the various options, it is most likely that he will go for an aluminum hull, a material that has always been the king of blue-water sailing.
Solid, reliable, lightweight, versatile, and above all, definitive, as it does not fear the wear and tear of time, is virtually indestructible, and requires very little maintenance.
Stem Marine, the Italian way to the ultimate boat
There are several shipyards in Europe that specialize in building aluminum sailing cabin cruisers.
France certainly leads the way with Allures Yachting, Alubat, Boreal, Garcia Yachts and Meta Yachts.
But there are also the Dutch shipyards Hutting Yachts and KM Yachtbuilders.
Italy itself, however, boasts a shipyard at the forefront of aluminum.
It is Stem Marine, a company founded in 1998 by Ezio Menna based in Medesano (Parma), which is currently among the world leaders in the construction of professional workboats for water rescue, firefighting, rescue, and offshore and coastal patrolling.
Its vessels, hand-built with attention to every detail, are used by firefighters and maritime authorities around the world, from France to Korea, Thailand to Venezuela.
In 2024 Stem Marine opened a new division dedicated to sailing yachts, which is inaugurated with the Stem 50. It is a 15.85-meter cabin cruiser dedicated to blue water and fast cruising that condenses cutting-edge looks, high-tech solutions and into which the company pours all its know-how on aluminum craftsmanship.
Stem 50, design and set-up taken care of in detail
The design of the Stem 50 is signed by French designer Nicolas Purnu, who trained in the prestigious Marc Lombard studio, with which he still collaborates.
His is the ergonomics of the elegant and functional deck plan with flying bridge, covered cockpit, outdoor galley, and deckhouse with electric windows, as well as the hull lines, including the appendages, including the double rudder blade, the drift blade with torpedo keel, and the fore and aft crash boxes.
in short, Nicolas Purnu has interpreted to the best of his ability the cabin cruiser specifications decided upon and personally followed by Michele Corradi, Stem’s Managing Director.
But the design of the Stem 50 does not end there.
We often encounter boats where there seems to be an inexplicable distance between those who designed and built the boat and the end user.
This is why Stem has chosen to have Luca Sabiu “come on board” as Navigation Advisor, a professional who in his long career has been an owner of racing and cruising cabin cruisers and who today supports many owners and their boats by personally taking care of their outfitting, upgrades and optimization, also in view of ocean crossings.
Luca will be in charge of bringing aboard the Stem 50 a new totally “Easy Sailing” concept, optimizing, in addition to the sail plan, the whole part of maneuvering and navigation, then the rigging, the deck plan, the set of sails, the equipment from bow to stern, the management of loads on board, up to electronics, instruments, energy and safety.
Limitless customization
Currently, construction of the first example of the Stem 50 is well underway, but here’s the kicker.
In fact, Stem Marine is allowing the new owner to follow all the final stages of the project, including acceptance testing , and especially to customize every aspect of the boat with the help of Luca Sabiu and the company’s technical staff. From the layout of the interior, to the materials of the fittings, from the arrangement of maneuvering equipment to the choice of sails, from navigation instruments to safety equipment.
All the way to power generation systems that include solar panels, inverters, special battery packs and hydro generators.
For those who dream of a custom-cut aluminum sailboat, the one offered by Stem Marine is truly an extraordinary opportunity.
The starting point for this innovative aluminum cabin cruiser is already there.
The signature design, the vocation for long sailing, the excellent craftsmanship, the high-tech solutions, and the high integration of on-board systems that share information for boat management and controls.
Everything else is ready to be shaped and customized to give life to that ideal, definitive boat in one’s own image that every sailor sooner or later dreams of owning.
