Vincenzo “Cino” Ricci, strictly Cino to everyone, the legendary skipper of Azzurra and initiator of the first Italian challenge to the Cup in 1983, was honored with an award from the America’s Cup Hall of Fame. The Romagnolo, who will blow out 90 candles this year, received the prestigious Richard Francis Sutton Medal. The award has been in existence since 2018, and is given by the Hall of Fame Committee to those whose contributions have promoted fair competition between rival countries within the America’s Cup. “The America’s Cup would not be the most prestigious trophy without gentlemen like Cino Ricci,” said Steve Tsuchiya, chairman of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame selection committee.

“Don’t make me look like a chocolatier, Cino,” the legendary Cino Ricci, Azzurra’s future skipper, was the one who recounted how much the Avvocato was fascinated by the America’s Cup without tergiversare, but at the same time had as his first concern to make a good impression.

The Advocate almost immediately welcomed Cino Ricci’s proposal because in fact the Cup was already on his mind well before the 1980s. Azzurra in fact is an idea that comes from afar, a vision Agnelli had 20 years earlier. But it was Ricci who materialized the Avvocato’s dreams, the right person at the right time, the one who paved the way for Italy in the America’s Cup.

If you ask “normal” people, those who don’t go to sea, to be clear, who the most famous Italian sailor is, even today a great many will tell you Cino Ricci. It may be that he was the leader of Azzurra, the first mythical Italian challenge to the America’s Cup; it may be that his Romagna accent filled the nights of the Moro di Venezia; it may be that he was the first to become a television face as well. It will be all these things together and more. A recognition from the Hall of Fame of this Cino trophy is truly deserved.
