On Thursday, August 22, the VELA Cup makes a stop at the Cala dei Sardi Marina in the Gulf of Cugnana. A great opportunity to end the summer with family or friends. A celebration of sailing with lots of prizes, fun and dreamy scenery. A breathtaking course, among the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago, in front of magnificent beaches on which, when the race is over, to relax and sip ice-cold cocktails while a band plays your favorite tune and the stars light up the night.
The Gulf of Cugnana, between Portisco and Porto Rotondo, is a true natural harbor sheltered from the strong winds that characterize the area. We are in the center of the Emerald Coast, surrounded by enchanting beaches and islands, such as the Maddalena Archipelago and Capriccioli Beach. In this beautiful bay, which can accommodate more than 100 boats at anchor with sandy bottoms between 3 and 8 meters, is Cala dei Sardi, the Mediterranean’s most environmentally friendly marina and the base of the VELA Cup Costa Smeralda.
Cala dei Sardi is Sardinia’s largest eco-friendly landing place, built with floating docks that prevent normal underwater currents from being altered while ensuring water transparency. On land, a relaxing oasis surrounded by beaches, English lawns and clear waters where you can swim and sunbathe. It is no coincidence that one of the leading charter companies, NSS Charter, with bases in Sardinia, Tuscany, the Amalfi Coast, the Aeolian Islands and the Caribbean, is based here. The whole is just 16 km from Olbia airport.
The formula is always the same, simple and extraordinarily effective. The VELA Cup Costa Smeralda is a regatta open to all types of racing and cruising boats, small cabin cruisers and catamarans, with no age restrictions, no red tape or technical complications, and with rankings drawn up by length. You don’t need a set of racing sails to participate, just a mainsail and jib to enter in the Cruising Boat category, but, for those who are more sporty and want to use spi, gennaker or code 0, there is also the Sport Boat category.
At the VELA Cup Costa Smeralda, almost everyone can win something: there are prizes for first place in each category, the most beautiful boats, and Classic Boats (at least 25 years old). There are dedicated prizes for boats from Beneteau and Lagoon shipyards, and finally, there”s also the prize for the last place finisher and the boat that did the best performance (Leg Winner). Think you are not competitive enough to take home an award? The last word is not said, because at the VELA Cup you can win even if you have a little luck, thanks to the prestigious raffle prizes, offered by our partners.
Regardless of the result though, if you participate in the VELA Cup, the berth is free. Who else but the VELA Cup gives you free mooring in August on the Costa Smeralda? Two nights to relax on the dock and make new friends with passionate sailors and new fellow cruisers.
