Once upon a time there was the Golden Age of sailing, an almost 30-year period of breakthroughs, extreme hulls and one-of-a-kind boats, a period of “pop” racing and unforgettable boats. Indeed, between the late 1960s and early 1990s, IOR was the real driving force behind sailing, the hidden architect of a world composed of characters unimaginable today, regattas that ascended to legend and iconic hulls. The IOR* (whose story can be found HERE), was the pinnacle of sailing, perhaps its highest peak, and, most importantly, was the fundamental push behind the creation of some of the iconic and most famous hulls ever.
Classic IOR: Celebrating the great icons of sailing
Designed and builtbetween the late 1960s and early 1990s, Giornale della Vela now wants to take a census of these unique and valuable boats, and for this it launches an appeal to all enthusiasts: report to us where these cult IOR boats are, and in what state. We will be grateful. The goal, in fact, is to include and celebrate these boats in our “registry” Classic Boats by Giornale della Vela (we explain how to do it HERE). BEWARE, however, putting them on the registry does not only mean to census them, it also means tributing with more value all those boats that have a history and a pedigree that allows us to highlight their real historical value –exactly as happens in the world of cars and real estate– to give them back the status they really deserve, and thus their true economical and historical place.

Classic IOR: help us celebrate the Golden Age of Sailing
The IOR was a reached peak, a unique period populated by hulls and characters that were nothing short of legendary. A period that has remained in the hearts of many, both the nostalgic ones and those who, instead, look back seeing a world of opportunities that is perhaps gone. The IOR (perhaps) was the time of purest sailing, the time of the most fearsome offshore races and round-the-world tours of our own “Brancaleone Armies.” It was the world of such personalities and great gentlemen as Raul Gardini, of Sir Peter Blake and Giorgio Falck. But it was also the world of sailors, the real ones, like “Jepson” (aka Giovanni Verbini), always with Falck on the various Guia as well as on the Rolly Go, peering at the maps of the Nagrafax (that’s how you had the meteo back then) terrified of icebergs, or peering at the stars in the ocean, wondering what was beyond the bow, in the dark, without radar.
The IOR is perhaps a world that has disappeared, in short, but actually remained. Left behind in memories, names and, above all, boats –the last great celebration of this. Help us, therefore, to find more. Many of you have already done so, we will outline a couple of them below, but, in the meantime, let’s keep it that way, both to celebrate these hulls and to breathe life back into them. Exactly as it happened, for example, for the Brava (story here), for Moby Dick (story here), so it can be for so many others. Let us census the Classic IORs to celebrate them, to save them, and to give them back the value they deserve.
MÄ VISTA – Sangermani
Sangermani Shipyards; 1972; 9.26 x 3.03 m; Cesare Sangermani
Let’s start with one of the “greats” you told us about, Mä Vista, class of 1972. But before that, by a name: Cesare Sangermani and, with him, Cantieri Sangermani, or the equivalent of a legendary name in domestic and international shipbuilding. Wooden hulls of rare beauty, imbued with an elegance now lost and, undoubtedly, also top quality. Mä Vista, in this sense, is not only a great hull, a great design, but also a special Sangermani. It was the last boat that Cesare Sangermani himself designed for himself. Launched in 1972, in Lavagna, home of the Shipyards, she is a very elegant little 9.2 meters, restored in 2018 and super active in the AIVE circuits. In fact, you will not fail to see it, or have seen it at sea, if you hang out in the environment.
HISTRIA – Petronio and Pecarich
Petronio and Pecarich; 1976; 12.58 x 3.78 m; Ron Holland
Born from the hands of Ron Holland, Histria was launched in 1976 by the Petronio and Pecarich shipyards. A famous hull in the upper Adriatic, this is a remarkable prototype Two Tonner IOR made of four layers of mahogany planking crossed at 45° over a framework of laminated wood frames and stringers. Looking at the lines, the architect’s hand is immediately evident, with restrained soaring and a short, truncated stern highlighted by mahogany left exposed, a delight to the eye. The performance, in turn, underscores its hidden qualities, light in wave passage and fast boliniera. A 1970s classic still active today.
ZURICH – Mayfair Marine
Mayfair Marine; 1991; 11.98 x 3.80 m; Judel / Vrolijk
Competition has always been a great driver of innovation, and needless to say, the Admiral’s Cup has always been a great centerpiece of this. For the 1991 edition, the Judel / Vrolijk duo designed and had Mayfair Marine build a pulled hull featuring a very large cockpit and a particularly forward deckhouse. The impression is one of confronting a “dinghy,” now quite a standard at racing hulls. “Zurich,” still sailing today, is born. Made of a single block of ultra-light carbon, strong with large ballast in fin, Zurich is an ultralight hull with a high straightening coefficient. Candlesticks, pulpits, ladder for going below deck, rudder shaft and various reinforcements-are made of titanium to save weight. An avant-garde hull, a child of its time and of competition taken increasingly to the extreme, a legacy more than present in today’s designs. He will perform well at both the One Ton Cup in Naples and that Admiral’s Cup in 1991.
