A very cold shower for Italian sailing at Quebec – Saint Malo, due to causes yet to be ascertained Alberto Riva, with the crew consisting of Tommaso Stella and Jean Marre, was forced to abandon the Class 40 Acrobatica. The sailors are described as safe and secure on a cargo ship that lent them aid.
There are currently no other updates on the situation, nor on the destination of the freighter, while the official Quebec – Saint Malo tracking continues to report Acrobatics on the run. In such cases a plausible hypothesis could be a serious keel failure, or a waterway caused by collision with an unidentified object or large cetacean. However, these are pure speculations of our editorial staff, waiting for confirmation.
Update from Regatta Management:
“The race management of the Transat-Québec-Saint-Malo was informed this Tuesday at 3 p.m. (French time) that the crew of the sailboat Acrobatica, captained by Italian Alberto Riva, had to abandon their sailboat and board the survival raft following an accident that resulted in the loss of the sailboat. At 1,228 nautical miles from arrival Acrobatica was in position 44° 33’56” N – 32° 35’49” W, and the cause of the accident remains to be ascertained at this time.
The Class40 E. Leclerc – Ville La Grand, the closest competitor, pulled away to assist Acrobatics as well as the Liberian tanker Silver Ray, which headed to the area after receiving the distress message. The 3 crew members, Alberto Riva, Jean Mare and Thomaso Stella were transported aboard the Silver Ray and are safe; the freighter is currently headed to the United States.
