There is a wonderful sail on Sunday, September 1, that you cannot miss, especially if, at the end of August, you are in northern Sardinia after participating in the VELA Cup in Cala dei Sardi(scheduled for August 22, we look forward to seeing you!).
Sailing for Life, three reasons to participate
Called“Sailing for Life,” participation is free and open to all hard-keeled boats. It is organized by our friends at Centro Velico Caprera in collaboration with Lega Navale Italiana Section of Milan, Club Nautico Arzachena and the non-profit organization We Will Care, under the patronage of the Navy. There are mainly three reasons to participate.
1. To remember a friend of sailing
The event is organized to commemorate Paolo Martano, a key figure of the Caprera Sailing Center who always believed in sailing as a tool for “psychological well-being.” Martano, who died prematurely this year, was vice-president of the LNI Milan and in the LNI also held national positions as a member of the Cultural Center for Training and was coordinator of the Territorial Training Center of Lombardy.
Paolo’s meeting with the nonprofit We Will Care came in 2017 when it was decided to pursue a research-intervention project that would combine the potential healing power of sailing and the beneficial effect of the island of Caprera with psychotherapy in women with prior cancer experience.
2. For a good cause
The second reason is that the Sail will serve as a launch for a fundraiser to contribute to the development of projects that see the centrality of people and their well-being. It will be possible to donate directly to CVC or make a donation through the gofundme portal, directing the donation to Sail for Life, at the unique link https://gofund.me/b6c397e9.
3. For the breathtaking route
Last, but not least, the beauty of the course, in one of the paradise seas that the whole world envies us. The start of the sail will be in the area in front of the entrance to Port Palma, in the stretch of sea bounded between Porco Island and Punta Fico. Specifically, three pathway options are provided.

Route 1 – 15 nm – Depart leaving Porco Island on the left, go around Monaci Island leaving Monaci Island on the starboard side, return to the finish line leaving Three Mountains Shoal and Porco Island on the starboard side.

Route 2 – 16nm – Stick with one buoy set in the Gulf of Arzachena near Cannigione, to be turned to starboard, with second buoy the starting buoy near the entrance to Porto Palma. This 8-mile stick may be walked 1 or 2 times depending on weather conditions. It is indifferent to leave the Three Mountains shoal to starboard or left.

Route 3 – 20nm – Depart with direction shoal Tre Monti to be left to starboard, after which head for Spargi Island leaving Santo Stefano Island to starboard. Turn, leaving both Spargi Island and Spargiotto Island to starboard and return toward Porto Palma, leaving Santo Stefano Island and the green marker buoy near Fico islet to the left.
