On the Newfoundland shoals, the Quebec-St. Malo is going through a strategically crucial phase: fog and little wind have been the constant in the last few hours, a situation that has inevitably reshuffled the innclassification positions. Ambrogio Beccaria on Allagrande Pirelli, leading from the early stages, momentarily lost the lead. In fact, the provisional third place of these hours is the child of an “investment,” that is, a more northerly positioning of the fleet that promises to pay dividends in the coming hours.
Quebec Saint Malo – Italians go north.
Allagrande Pirelli should take advantage of a significantly better angle to the wind than those further south, which should ensure a better, more easterly course, while to the south they will likely have to gybe back to the north in the next few hours to reposition themselves. So there is a good chance that the Italian on today’s day will return to the lead. And the good news for Italian sailing is that, on the same course as Beccaria but a few miles behind, there are also Alberto Bona’s IBSA and Alberto Riva’s Acrobatica. A potentially promising situation then, to be evaluated as it evolves in the coming hours.
Further ahead is the big jump into the Atlantic, to be navigated far north of the usual routes, with frigid temperatures and depressions that will move rather quickly. It will be to be seen, based on the evolution of weather systems, whether it will always be convenient to keep a very northerly course, as the Italians are doing these hours, or whether there will then be a need to “climb” southward based on the movement of depressions.
